Forums - Nintendo Discussion - XBox Is Weak, Nintendo Needs To Go For the Kill

Nintendo should do what WCW did in 96 with Hogan. Turn Mario in to the "bad" Hollywood Hogan type. Give him a full black outfit and mix it up with some old school DX stuff. Have commercials with Mario telling Master Chief and Nathan Drake to "suck it". That will shake the kiddy image for sure. LOL

Nintendo's position is not as untenable as you makes it sound... Really, the only doomsday scenario I see for them I'm the next few years is if they take that "kill or be killed" mentality you mentioned, go all in on an expensive console sold at a large loss to compete, and it doesn't work out.

Microsoft isn't going anywhere... They're still selling plenty and have shown that the Xbox is a kind of flagship, cool brand they'd lack otherwise and so have been willing to accept major losses on it. There is zero chance of nintendo kicking them out with the NX, even if the NX is a smashing success.

Nintendo can still make plenty of money in a three console environment, they'd just need to be on more equal footing like they were last gen.

Upgrading a console is to improve is hardware capabilities like the expansion memory of the N64 did, not relying on the Cloud.

Also, MSoft already talked about Cloud Computing with the XboxOne and almost everybody was against it because that implies an always connected console, with no offline play. The NX would turn into something like OnLive.

It would be like a physical cloud computing device in your home. Its a physical device you plug into your NX to upgrade what it can do in the future. Juding from the size of the device from the patent it wouldn't be a simple ram cart. It looks like the size of a old school external hard drive. Plus it can boost the graphics capabilities of the handheld too. This isn't the Xbox online thing but it can do that too. At least this is what I think it does from reading the patent.

...

So what you're saying is that it will be like a second console that connects with the first one (I assume that it will do that through Thunderbolt or a similar kind of connexion) that connects to the first one, multiplying its capabilities. That would be more like an add-on, but I get what you mean.

And while I'm not sure that Nintendo would follow that route, I have a hard time imagining how they would sell that thing without confusing people.

Here's a link if you want to check it out. I think it could be big for Nintendo

Xbox is hardly weak. There is a fair amount of difficulty on Nintendo's part when it comes to disrupting Microsoft in the console market ...

The obvious flaw in trying to directly compete with Microsoft is that they would need a much bigger workforce to sustain their new and upcoming platforms. They would at least need to triple their current employee pool to get much better output than they did previously. Nintendo also needs to be vigilant about the decisions they make about their hardware too ...

It seems people think Nintendo is strong because of how well Wii performed. But Wii appealed to different market than Xbox. Wii succeeded while having no signficant impact on Xbox 360, the software sales showed they had different audiences as well.

Thanks for the link. So it would be a mix of an add-on and cloud computing.

That patent seems to support the idea of NX as an hybrid platform with relatively weak hardware (because of its portable nature) that, when connected to the add-on, increases its capabilities and becomes a more powerful home console.

I can see some troubles with that approach, but we'll see if this patent comes to life and if it does, how Nintendo manages to do that.

You make me think its going to be something like this

It's not about being 1st, 2nd or 3rd. It's about selling enough units to make a healthy profit. Xbox 360 was 3rd last gen, but I think it did alright in terms of sales, don't you?

I don't think it would be a portable. Didn't they already confirm they are working on a home console? I'm leaning towards a handheld and a home console. I'm thinking that the home console will be more powerful than the PS4 and X1, and the handheld will be more powerful than the vita. I'm thinking that when you are using the handheld around the house, its possible to stream it from the console to the handheld, so you got console quality graphics and the like on the handheld. And when the time comes and the home console needs a boost, they can roll out this add on and just like that NX gets stronger and just like that there is instant longevity to stay viable when the PS5/X2 come out. At least this is how I see it.

I didn't meant that NX would be a handheld. I simply used the theory of the hybrid device that acts as both a home and a handheld console and, because of handheld side of it, it can't be too powerful as that would drain whatever battery it has in a matter of minutes.

Not that I support the theory, but I just found it fitting with this patent.

In any case, I'm quite lost on what or how NX will be, so everything is possible.

Nintendo is doomed and there isn't much they can do unless they pull a miracle. Xbox one is selling way too fast and gaining more and more momentum.
