For that reason it is better to look at the past in any point to determine output, not the future. SE hasn't been releasing stuff for years that was high quality. |
One must also remember that many of the games on Square's list are being developed by other studios.
Tomb Raider: Crystal Dynamics Star Ocean 5: Tri-ace NieR: Platinum Games Deus Ex: Eidos
The ones that are on Square Enixe's own plate are Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The first two have been in development for a long time, and are presumably not that far from completion. Final Fantasy XV was announced to be playable from beginning to end, a few days ago. And that around 50% of that is polished to "finished game" status. And Kingdom Hearts III will probably be out 2017 at the latest. As for Final Fantasy 7, they're no doubt aiming for a 2017 release because that's FF7's 20th anniversary. But I don't think they'll make that deadline.

To be fair Nintendo has used other developers to make some of their bigger games as well. HAL laboratory for SSB or Retro for DK Tropical Freeze and Metroid Prime games. Capcom once worked on a Zelda game, and it was actually pretty good.
The story and presentation side of Nier Automata will be developed by SE in house I believe so half and half for that. Gotta check on that..
Damn, I'm nostalgic for a SMRPG remake now.
