Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What Rise of the Tomb Raider's sales could imply

So, I got RotTR on day one.  It hasn't exactly set the world on fire but I'm still playing it. Still loving it. That's all that counts, right?

No. I hate that this game is doing so poorly in sales because it's spectacular. My favorite gaming experience so far this year. The problem is that, if it doesn't sell well on Xbox One and then turns around and flops on the other platforms (don't let me down, PS4 fanbase!) then what's the motivation to make another one? Why bother with all of the content and quality if they can make a $10 Arcade game and make more money?

You can't force people to like what you like and support what you want them to support but the ball has really been dropped on this one. Probably due to poor management and timing but that doesn't change the reality that a really high profile title from a known quality franchise is being totally ignored. This is the kind of thing that keeps third parties from supporting Nintendo because "Our games don't sell on their platforms".  A guy like me is going to go wherever the games are--if that's PS4 then, so be it.  But if you "Xbox Only" guys want to ensure that quality games come to your consoles then you need to start putting your money where your mouth is before you wind up going hungry.

Sorry in advance

Too busy with Fallout 4 to give a fuck about Tomb Raider.

Also, I find it hard to believe they didn't know their sales were going to be wrecked by CoD and Fallout. It's logical to believe they think the game has legs and are fine with the staggered release.

Lastly, they got paid for this deal, so that offsets money lost by lower initial sales. And I don't think it casts a doubt on future games on the platform because it's not as if SE is expecting the Xbone version to outsell the PS4 version, there are just too many more PS4's out there for that to happen.

Doesn't seem to me that quality games are a problem on the Xbone. Quality games getting released in bunches of 5 or 6 tends to leave some of those games selling lower than they deserve. But that's not the consumers fault imho.

The game is cool, good looking and becoming addictive to me. Everything is better than the last one which was recommended to me by my friend. I like finding and raiding the tombs.

RoTTR could very well have X1 finish with the highest sales if the PS4 release bombs.

Historically late ports seldom are very successful. Rare are the exceptions like Minecraft where the title sells regardless. If the holiday 2016 date holds for the PS4 version, it could again be swamped by mega-titles and fall by the wayside.

And finally, the most important element is who the IP holder is and what their views are. By all accounts, Square Enix has been poorly managed for a while (the CEO resigned in disgrace in 2013 and things haven't exactly looked stellar in the time since then).

If RoTTR appears to them as an utter failure, they could easily chalk it up to 'people don't want more TR' instead of 'we royally screwed this up and TR deserves a better chance'.

If RoTTR was mulitplatform and released on a non-suicidal date, there's every reason to believe it could have been a big hit out of the gate and perhaps even surpassed the 3.4M first month sales of TR2013. Speaking of that, TR2013 must have been managed pretty poorly on the budget side because they publicly complained about 'disappointing sales' until the later press release after hitting 6M units, by which time they said it had surpassed profit expectations.

If your budget is whacked to the point where 3.4M units sold in the first month is a failure in any way, either you're Activision selling COD, or you are insanely bad at business and need to do literally anything other than be in charge of a video game company.

It was all bad business from Microsoft, Square Enix and crystal dynamics. First and foremost it should of never been a timed exclusive for XboxOne, tomb raider has always sold best on Sony consoles. Secondly they shouldn't of been so stupid and smug releasing the same time as Fallout4 they simply set the game up for low sales straight off the mark by doing that. They should of swallowed their pride and delayed it. Fallout sold over 5 million its first week, 5 million! I think your safe to say there was around at least 500,000 gamers in that bunch who would of probably bought ROTR if it wasn't a choice between that and fallout 4. I really don't know what they were thinking. Tomb Raider is a great franchise and it was great to see a brilliant reboot but they fucked up here. I just hope the damage isn't done and that ps4 gamers do give it a try in a year, but it's asking a lot now I think, gamers can be stubburn. Personally I can't wait for it and will buy it day one when its released on ps4.

I watched as previously exclusive Xbox franchises migrated to the PS3 (Bioshock, Mass Effect, Lost Planet) and the Playstation crowd was pretty warm...I guess.  I hope they don't make Lara getting sales raped a holiday tradition.  Release it in August or September for the PS4 and toss in all of the DLC to sweeten the pot.  Heck, at this point, I wonder what the motivation is to even release the DLC on Xbox One.  With sales so low, how much could they even stand to make?

It comes down to release date, price, and content. If it is $60 Fall 2016 then no.  If it is $30 with DLC by Fall 2016 then sure.

I think it will do pretty well on PS4, but a ton of revenue will be made up on the PC release. Publishers/Developers seem to make more on each copy sold through steam, and Tomb Raider (2013) was very successful there.

I honestly think we'll see a third Tomb Raider game, but without any surprise exclusivity nonsense.

If it does great on PS4, maybe TR3 will be PS4 exclusive! :P

Don't think it will do that great. One year old game, kinda associated with Xbox with a really bad buzz... And lots of games next year, RoTR died against Fallout, he won't do better next Christmas. Plus, it will be hard for RoTR to sell after Uncharted 4...

The best chances for the game will be Steam sales (I'll buy it for 20€ max, like the previous one). I hope they'll hire at least one one smart marketing guy for the next entry in the series to fix this...
