Forums - Sales Discussion - Is Yôkai Watch a massive failure in the US?

http://www.vgchartz.com/game/72232/yokai-watch/USA/

Looking at VGC data, the launch of Yokai Watch overseas hasn't been terrific. Despite being a phenomenon in Japan, it doesn't seem to appeal to westerners so far.

I see NoA tweeting a lot about it, but how's communication around the title on US TV, in shops etc.? Is there even any hype about it?

Will sales pick up in Black Friday figures? Would be amusing if the "next Pokemon", as many call it, ends with less than 100K sold over the holidays.

I think it could be a success, but the audience in Japan was pre-built based on the successful anime/manga series. I don't think they have any serious exposure in the USA afaik.

Pokemon for example started in the USA with the gameboy game AND anime starting in September 1998.

For YW it's apparently Disney XD, which is a pretty weak place to try to get major exposure going :

Well when it first came out in Japan it didn really took off quite fast.

I think the first week it sold less than 100k. Then it only reached 1mil when the sequel came out. I heard people saying that the anime gave it that boost.

Pocky Lover Boy!

The game gets a decent amount of advertising in the US at least. When I visited family for Thanksgiving, I saw several ads for both the game and anime on TV.

YW didn't get all that popular though until the anime took off though.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

My guess is much depends on success of the show this could be a series that builds.

I have no clue what kids (5-12) are into these days besides Minecraft.

It needs the show. I don't think I've seen an advertisement for it yet.

I think the anime isn't as popular as it should. That's what drove the sales of the game to such height in Japan. I don't know if Disney XD was the right choice. Maybe Netflix would have been wiser.

I have many kids. None of them have said a word about this game despite the commercials for it... I'm going to vote "Yes" for failure.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

When in doubt... blame it on the marketing.
