If Nintendo were to release so soon it would be a clear complete panic mode reaction. No console maker I know of has released so early from their previous release.

NX release in Jan 2016 would be 44 months since last release. Does anyone know of _any_ console releasing so soon since previous release?

Where you get from Jan 2016 release!?

The NX is coming out next month and it wasn't even announced officially! Cool.

Thats what I get from posting while tired late at night.  A Nov-Dec 2016 launch would be 54-55 months which would indeed be a few months longer than the 52 months from Saturn to Dreamcast.  Though Dreamcast was Sega's last console before they bowed out.  I'm not suggesting Nintendo is anywhere near needing to bow out, but this is still a panic release if they release December 2016.

It's obviously going to release in November or December, certainly not in January. As for your question: Xbox 360 launched 4 years after the original Xbox. Nintendo DS launched 4 years after the GBA as well. And the Dreamcast, of course.

Original XBOX to X360 was exactly 4 years IE 48 months.  Microsoft had very little idea what they were doing the first time around and were trying to jam themselves into the market, not trying to hold on by the seat of their pants like Sega was doing with the Dreamcast and what Nintendo seems to be doing with the NX.

Btw, X360 to XBONE was a whopping 96 months.

To those with selective memory the original Xbox was out 4 years before Microsoft launched the Xbox 360

I kinda agree with IGN that 2016 launch is not possible with manufacturing starting that late.

This is mass production.  The ps4 started mass production q3 2013 and launched q4 the same year. This is much earlier then that.  No way Nintendo starts mass production q1 and then doesn't start cashing in on the massive expense until 2017.

Yep, this is most definitely a panick release. I feel bad for the people who bought the Wii U and Nintendo says they wont leave them behind, but thats ten million they built in three years.

Because Microsoft had to beat Sony to market. After that (and the RROD incident they caused because of it) Microsoft copied Sony's ten year profit plan so they could stop them from gaining marketshare. All consoles that Microsoft makes will follow. Its not the same intent, but definitely the same amount of years.

No 360 came out because catching the PS2 was a lost cause even at only 2 years into the gen for Xbox, it's amazing how people have selective memories, the original Xbox was also starting to sell below GC numbers at that point and was at  number of points being outsold by it then closing the gap between them so they moved on to their next console, no different to this. Believe me X1 won't follow Sony's 10 year plan, no chance because they're being beaten just as hard this gen by Sony and games are now being announced for PS4 mainly, 2016 will be an indicator of what happens next for MS and 2017 will determine it.

PS3 even would have dominated that gen had Sony not made a hash of the console for the first 3 years and even then it still outsold the 360 in the end and now X1 is losing market share. Believe me if the current sales keep going as they are through out 2016 don't be surprise if we start hearing word about the next Xbox in 2017.
