Since the 3.0 Wii firmware update, a list of the 20 "most popular" games in the virtual console shows up in the Wii Shop Channel. Though there's no confirmation, it's suspected that popularity here means sales. This top 20 is by region: Japan, and North America being 2 regions, Europe being another, though I'm not sure whether Australia is included in this region or not. The list is aparently updated every week.

So, my question is, even if we're not sure these are sales (or are we?) would there be any interest in providing a weekly feature including all the 3 (or 4) of these regional charts, comparing each week's tops with last week's, etc? I myself would be willing to do my part with an European Wii, though I can't right now because I don't have it online (just moved home, still no internet access, don't know how long it will be).

I think this would be a good idea. Maybe give us a chart for WiiWare/Virtual Console, XBLA, and PSN games. That would be interesting to track if it could be done.

I still think there should be an option in the VC for users to rate the games out of, say, a 5-star rating system. It should be restricted to ONLY those that have purchased said game, and the Wii would be able to tell. Then there should be a Top 20 feature for that. Alien Soldier and Sin & Punishment might not be highest sellers, but they would be highest rated, and that'd mean something.

Do you know when it is updated? like is it a weekly thing (so would represent the best sellers for the week).

My guess is weekly. But all you really have to do to find out is check it regularly.

All I was suggesting was a thread be created, and some people committing to posting results every week, lets say at least 2 members for each region (for redundancy). Or maybe the group could PM data to someone instead, who would then aggregate the results into a standard format (with full credits to everyone), if that's better. Then if there's any interest to it, the thread could be stickified by the mods.

I'm not about to ask ioi for news posting permission, or anything like that. I'm asking for a grassroots effort cause I'd find the data interesting myself, that is all. If I had my Wii online, I'd simply start posting weekly EU charts. Unfortunately my current estimate on having my broadband connection installed is several months from now.
