Forums - Gaming Discussion - is there a limit to unrealism in games?

I'm not a arguing that games should be realistic because at the end of it all games are games, but I feel they should be logical to some extent whether its real logic or fantasy logic created by the developers. This is one of the reasons I could never get into Just Cause. No matter how I try to enjoy it there is just something wrong with flying through the sky on a lit cylinder. Thoughts?

Games by default are not supposed to be realistic if you take a look at the biggest franchises to date ...

Limiting the game just means limiting player freedom and empowerment which eliminates one of the biggest reasons why some people use it as a form of escapism ...

To answer your question, yes there is supposed to be no limit for the so called "unrealism" in games ...

No limits, see noby noby boy and Katamari damacy. It is a plus when a game is consistent with it's own mechanics and No Deus ex Machina crap like the end of ME3 please.

Unrealism is fine, what bothers me more is when your character is suddenly made helpless to advance the plot. The unwinnable boss fight crap, throwing everything at it, yet since the boss is supposed to escape it ends just before you win. Even worse when you're supposed to die at the end, but if you die 1 second too soon it's try again.

Games should make sense in their own world. Well, even so.. Why couldn't you just give Aeris a phoenix down...

Anyways. I haven't played a game where something was so unrealistic that it ruined the experience for me. There have been moments where I have complained or thought that things were silly, but it was never bad enough to ruin anything.

Well. There has to be some sort of internal logic. Like if a NPC uses a key to open a door. You find said key and it doesn't work. That's not fair. But JC having the zip line is fine. It's Links magic sack that holds everything.

You can't make everything realistic. Or the Just Cause series wouldn't exsist. If the zip line wasn't invented, all because it wasn't realistic. Pratically every game wouldn't be. If more people didn't accept things like the Zip line. Zelda would not exist. Pokemon, FIre Emblem, Smash Bros. If you become that picky.

Do you like the Batman games, by any chance? He's basically Just Cause too.

I agree there has to be some logic in games, not much, just a little.

I suppose there is no limit when it comes to making games, but I guess it has to have a good presentation and a good functioning system? Like goat simulator just seems really weird with the things you can do in it, but people seem to like that, so I got nothing...

That's fine. That's goat's simulator internal logic. But you wouldn't want, if say, you were playing Uncharted. And the minons all of a sudden can lift buildings. And you had to fight them like that for that point on.

Yeah, that would be weird, but sometimes having things like that happen, with codes for example, could make it look kinda funny.. xD
