Forums - Gaming Discussion - New IPs on Wii?

Throughout this thread, I've noticed a recurring theme from certain Wii-bashing people, about why the 360/PS3 will win. In general it goes something like this:

"Developers keep putting their trusted IP's on 360/PS3. Wii only gets new, unproven IP's from most major developers."

I found this interesting, because I was always under the impression that was Nintendo's original goal for the Wii. I know this is the reason I bought a Wii.

Most people seem to think that Nintendo didn't compete technically with Microsoft and Sony because they couldn't, well I say that four generations of Nintendo home consoles disagree with you. Every single Nintendo console has been technically competitive, either the most powerful or near to the most powerful (Do not bring the DS up as an argument againsed. The reason why Nintendo has always won the handheld battles is because Nintendo is the only company that truly understands the handheld market is completely different to the console market.)

The reason Nintendo kept the power of the Wii down was because they saw where the video games industry was headed, and didn't like the future. Large consoles with expensive development means a risk that fails could lose millions. So we see the same game over and over. Wii was designed to bring out the new things, not to attract the old ideas. Stagnation leads to decay, new ideas ha to be brought in to stop the video game market from collapsing.

So it seems the Wii is designed to bring in new IP's from developers, not attract the old favourites. PS3 can keep GTA, FF, etc, Wii wants something new.

So do you think this will be successful? Not successful in terms of Selling heaps of consoles and making buckets of money (that's a given), but successful in terms of fostering new IP's, and creating some new multi-million selling franchises for third parties (Nintendo has already succeeded in this). Or do you think that Third parties are just going to bring their profitable IP to the Wii in some waggle-adding fashion?

Are you interested in seeing fresh new IP's? Or do you prefer your FF, GTA, and MGS?

Factor 5 - 3rd party

Ninja theory - 3rd party

Level 5 - 3rd party

Insomniacs - independent, but they do love sony.

And i dont see how FF13 is not a new ip ? it may be called FF but everything about the game is new.   Its not a sequal or spinof.

OK, you seem to have (purposely?) missed the point of the post. The idea was there is a prevailing attitude of "Big, proven IP's are the most important." Of course the PS3 will get some new IP's, especially since many companies don't HAVE proven franchises to fall back on. You can't stop new people coming up with new ideas.

I wanted to know, however, what people thought about the undelying trend and the attitude of third parties to do with new IPs (and more importantly, completely new ideas), especially large development houses who have a portfolio of successful franchises. Do they release it on PS3 as a full game with a large development budget and risk heaps? Do they make a smaller cheaper title and release it on Wii? And will the lower dev costs encourage developers to take risks with their games and create something that might not sell?

Will games such as Lair and other "risky" games succeed on the PS3? Will that effect other developers, make them think twice about publishing new IPs?

Also, let's not get started with the "Nintendo only makes Mario" junk. I challenge you to think of one single gaming company who have come up with as many successful new IP's as Nintendo over the last 5 years. (But do it in a different thread please)

Gaming is for us to run away from our reality into another realm. The controllers Nintendo provided us (Stylus/Wiimote) brought the interactivity closer to realism than buttom smashing. Bodily motions that we're familiar with is better than any eye candy uber 1337 graphics. IMO.

You mention people are saying the PS3/Xbox360 will win, but because of Japan is there any doubt the Wii will win worldwide against the 360? For me it's just whether it can win wordwide against the PS3.

For me, I'd like all to Win. More games, more choices. Us consumers got nothing to lose with we get more choices... Unfortunately, not all of us can afford multiple console systems.
