Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gaming ethics...who is in the right?

So my friend and I just got in a dispute.

He was bragging about how he bought the Tomb Raider bundles, so he can play it and get a full non-restock fee refund. I told him if you liked it keep it. He told me Square's didn't care about PS4 fans why should he care about squares.

I hope this isn't widespread. Yes you can do it, but you hurting the retailer, Microsoft, and Squares. Was I out of line for telling him if he enjoyed it then keeping it is the ethical thing to do?

If he doesn't want it enough right now to pay for it then he shouldn't try to find ways to play it without paying.

I don't see what is wrong with both ways, clearly he isn't interested in owning the X1, then why should he?
If he did all just to play the game, but scalebound could turn out great.
Yes it was a huge blow to the PC and Ps4 community, especially since TR main audience is there, but Microsoft and square is already losing a lot of profit on this deal, also because they launched it at the wrong time. Why it bother's you? It's not your money :P  If he asked you, then your answer was fair as well.

I am struggling to the problem, if he enjoyed the game and already bought the X1 and the game, why not keep it? selling it again is just a waste of money.

The problem is he gets a full refund through the "holiday returning" loophole. He didn't lose anything.

I didn't think what I said would get him so uptight. In hindsight, I probably should of let him brag and not of said anything. I'm sure he'll forget it in a few days, I know I will.

I corrected my statement after reading the thread twice.

I don't know why he got uptight over it, both options is good and there shouldn't have been any heated discussions about it.

In his point of view, he is probably upset over the entire deal. I know i am.. i have to wait to get it on both PC and Ps4, i am not interested in the Xb1 until after Scalebound, so it is a shitty situation.. he already bought the XB1, maybe it is a good idea to hold on to it or sell it at restock price and spend it on something else..   But he shouldn't be upset but he will come around

If he just wants to play the game early, so be it and let him return the bundle. I think, though, that he might be returning the bundle for one of the wrong reasons. Getting butthurt about timed exclusives is a silly thing to do. Next time you see him, tell him he needs to grow a pair.

bet: lost

I think what your friend is doing is wrong, and pretty much on the level of piracy. But I highly doubt he'll think twice about what he's doing.

I miss the old days, where if someone pirated a game, or stole a game, or what have you, they pretty much kept it to themselves and didn't really want to let a whole bunch of people know. Now pirates act like they're Robin Hood, that they're the victims, that when companies do something they disagree with they get a free pass, and that what they do is justified because of evil corporations, capitalism, etc., so we get a bunch of messages about people acting like they're heroes "sticking it to the man".

It's not bread to feed your starving family. It's video games.

Again, people are going to do what people are going to do. But please stop trying to pretend you're heroes or victims.

I don't think it's unethical, and not because of my opinion on Square's or anything alike. And in general, thinking of big companies as of ethical or unethical persons is kind strange IMO.

On the other hand, for what it's worth - I wouldn't do something like that.

    CU......or CF ?

I'd say it is pretty unethical.
He is taking advantage of certain rules that were made for completely different reasons, and playing a game for free as a result. Him being a part of society in no way entitles him to just play a game for free with no consequences. That isn't how it works.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

The way I see it is that it's me against them. The consumer against the companies. They'll try and scam me in a heartbeat so I should do the same.
