Forums - Music Discussion - Adele is on course to sell 3M copies of 25 in the US in the first week

When I heard news of Adele finally coming back with an album, I wondered if she had waited too long, if people had forgotten about her or got over her in the 4 years since 21.

It seems the answer to this a reasounding NO! The latest numbers about the first week of sales of the her new album are putting her total sales at about 3 million copies which is insane. [Link]

This result is even more impressive considering we live in a time where less and less people buy records. She broke a 15 year old record (N'Sync's No String Attached sold about 2.4 million in its first week) that I frankly didn't think could ever be broken.

So congratulations to Adele! You deserve it!

** About the album itself, it's been growing on me. At first listen I thought it was underwhelming because it doesn't feature song akin to Rolling in the Deep or Rumour Has It but there's really good balads on 25, Million Year Ago being my current favorite.

same!! the album is pure quality so it deserves all the fame

Million Years Ago is my favorite, too! love the retro-jazz twist element! wondering if she'll promote it as a single

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

She kinda has that Celine Dion circa 1998 appeal where she can sell albums to teenagers but has a large adult/mom n' pop following.

Its unbelievable to say the least!!

For me i thought she MIGHT break Britney Spears's record for Oops with 1.3 million which released in 2000 for the biggest sales in a single week by a female but boy was i so wrong lol

Congrats to her since she deserves it tbh.

It's one of the song she sang during her press tour (along with Hello, Water Under the Bridge and When We Were Young) so I think it has good chances of being a single.

Signature goes here!

25 opened to 170k in France, biggest opening ever

it opened to 263k in Germany, the biggest opening in 7 years and the biggest digital opening ever (88k)

Adele’s 25 is officially the UK’s biggest selling Number 1 album ever

25 has the biggest debut ever in New Zealand, already x2 platinum which means 30k+

I think you need more than just advertising to be this wildly successful.

R.I.P. artists who can write songs all by themselves.

There is a place for both.

You and I may not like Taylor Swift, but she does write her songs and she managed to be one of the most successful pop stars right now.

Music industry has opened to everyone thanks to self publishing, ease of access and free promotion on social media. Even experimental musicians are finding success they probably never dreamed of.

Who cares? Why is this an issue?

Ew. At least she's not the worst. Impressive numbers anyway, never thought an album could sell this much FW anymore.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I agree while I greatly respect someone who has the talent to do it all, it's very close-minded to shun artists who collaborate with others to put out their music. Who said that making music should be a solitary endeavour anyway? Also it's worth noting that Adele does write her own songs.

Because imo, it's like selling someone else's painting and taking credit for it. She sings someone elses songs, and said person sits in the shadows, unrecognized and unappreciated by the public. Sure, she has an amazing voice, but amazing voices are a dime a dozen. Singer songwriters who perform are much more talented.

I could go on Youtube right now and find 10 amazing singers doing cover versions of other people's music. But I could search for 10 years and be lucky to find ONE great singer song writer.

It's just the whole underhanded nature of pop music these days that I loath.
