Shanghai Oriental Pearl today announced that Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One have reached a total of 500,000 owners. Oriental Pearl, the company that distributes both the PS4 and XB1 in China, said that they hope to reach over 1 million owners in 2016 through the continued release of software titles and enhanced digital services.

It is worth noting that the consoles sold by Oriental Pearl are official Chinese versions and these numbers do not include import consoles from Japan, Asia, Europe and the US. This is a very big reason as to why the number is also very low as a lot of Chinese gamers will import their console from overseas.

Any idea on the split?

Nope, only that PS4 is higher.

Both are doing well. The Xbox One recently saw Minecraft launch for the system and is getting Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires soon. 

The PS4 is getting Warframe as well as Gravity Rush Remastered (Before the West) before the end of the year. 

The good thing about both consoles though is that they are both region free, and trust me, I have plenty of friends who own and play GTA5 even though the game is banned in China. 

It is worth noting though that the number of games available for both system is still very very small. The PS4 should have around 30 games available officially in the country which is a far cry from the 500 or so available in the West. Thank God for importing!

Not too shabby really. Wonder what the total 8th gen installbase will be when all is said and done.
