Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What made the great Nintendo games great?

It seems when Nintendo made the Wii they had a clear goal of making gaming accessible to a broader audience with a simplistic control interface. The question is though did that result in better games, or just games that grandma could play too?

Nintendo tried to hit the sweet spot with the Wii U gamepad by having complex controls (dual analog stix) mixed with simplistic controls (motion+touch). And the casual audience that owned the Wii, they've largely moved on to other things smartphones tablets being the most likely candidates. The Wii U sales tell the tale of Nintendo's attempt to make a controller interface for everyone.

Imo all great games have one thing in common. Easy to learn hard to master.

Being able to achieve that is something that is limited more by imagination and less by a controller interface.

Of course I could be completely wrong

Games that were motion control focused I found got boring pretty quickly. rather then having them as an additional gameplay mechanic.

What made them great? Originality and creativity.

For me, they were a breath of fresh air in an industry that had grown stagnant and predictable. They were the first thing since the leap to 3D in the mid 90s that actually felt new and exciting.

Originality and creativity steams from having a great imagination.

And that's exactly what Miyamoto and a few other key developers had back in the early to late 80's. DK, Metroid, Kid Icarus, SMB, Zelda... it boggles the mind to think about. They were, for a time, doing to video games what the Beatles did for music.

Don't take this the wrong way but you're quite a rare breed indeed haha

Many tend to think that the Wii days were dark times with the whole focus on waggle and whatnot. And while I did stray from them and look else where, I have to admit they made some pretty great games for the system.

To the OP: What I think makes Nintendo games great is that they have a level of polish and uniqueness to them that tends to be hard to find these days.

No offense taken, I am fully aware my opinions are often out of step with the "core" crowd. :)
