Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Forced Windows 10 download?

I'm a little behind on tech news these days (new parent, enjoying parenthood these last year or so). But I just encountered a forced download of Windows 10 on my system even tho I specifically selected to download at a later time (no option to "never download/upgrade".

This slowed down my connection for a bit and kinda put a dent on my monthly cap. I mean, WTF MS, is the trust of their customers so unimportant to them that they shove crap like this down our throats now?

Literally just got the download right now. I was going to upgrade at some point, so I guess I'll just let it happen.

Edit: But yeah, as a matter of them just forcing downloads like this on people. Fuck those guys.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Interesting
For me it was a normal download

Follow this OP: http://www.myce.com/news/how-to-uninstall-kb3035583-the-windows-10-downloader-for-windows-7-and-8-1-75681/

Helped me too few months back to remove the files.

You have to "Hide" it from the security update/program updates depending on what OS you have (Win 7 or 8.1) after doing the above so it wont download it again.

I'm keeping Win 8.1 on my laptop and will get Win 10 when I build my new PC next year.

Sucks you lost your data (data caps suck ;x) but ya its annoying that it automatically downloads it in the background lol.

Close call for me then, I was about to install that KB3035583 updte when I noticed your post and proceeded to hide the update while choosing the optional ones. I won't be using 10 till I see some more changes and perf gains and an eventual price tag next year since I don't want to lose my Win 7 key and do plan on upgrading some of my parts which win 10 will definitely disagree with and lock me out of.

Some people like a more open and upgradable environment.

Some people like a more secure and private environment. ;)

Best to stay on topic to Windows 10 auto downloading, and not Mac VS PC thread tho.

But @ OP you might want to consider not following that guide to get rid of the GWX (Get Windows 10) app on your PC completely, especially if you have a Data Cap and you do want to get W10 at a point down the road, because the folder which most of those guides tells you to take ownership and delete contains some of the new OS already downloaded.... which if you follow and delete you'll just need to redownload it again later on costing you more bandwidth.

I got rid of the whole GWX because it was doing that background download into my SSD where my OS is at... and yeah only got 240gb of that to go around, didn't fancy it being taken up by an OS I wont be jumping over to any time soon. (also don't have a data cap so re-downloading the files here is less costly for me)

Yeh that's just what I sorted out myself a few minutes ago, I thought since I've opted out of the update altogether, I may as well kill GWX while I'm at it, gave full right to myself for changing the folder and it's EXE's entirely and renamed them while also editing the scheduled tasks to further make sure it doesn't bother me again.

Sadly, it's already downloaded onto my system by now. Choosing not to upgrade to it, however. Just pisses me off that MS shoves this crap down our throats even when we specifically mention that we don't want it in the options they gave us.

Just when my opinion of MS has improved enough for me to consider getting an XB1 for the holidays, they pull this crap. >_

Yeah the issue was a few months back they changed that update KB3535583 from being optional to recommended to get more people to have it on their system, now that it has turned into nagware if it's still left running on Win7 popping up with stats about how many people are loving Win10 and How easy it is to update so I've had a few calls to help people remove it completely, should also add that update to your list of blocked updates just so it doesn't redownload again, can always unblock it later if you want to upgrade since the free Get Windows 10 program runs for the whole first year of the OS being on the market.
