Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What impacted Halo 5's sales the most?

So many 360 owners are now on PS4 and the small X1 user base.

Well obviously i cant complain about the quality since i cant buy it.
Maybe its because of the competition?

Combination of factors:

1- Halo 4 being a disappointment to most fans
2- Halo: MCC having big online issues at launch
3- Releasing at the same timeframe of both Fallout 4 and CoD: BOIII and other major games
4- 343 Industries not having the fame of Bungie
5- Destiny taking away some of the audience
6- The series not being innovative anymore

I would also add, as a factor, than to sell more you need to push hardware sales more, and it's harder given the PS4 competition (in the 360 area, you would get Halo, but also for 100$ less than the PS3 better multi-platform games, and some say a better controller for FPS).

September NPD (bundles included): 713k
October NPD (bundles included): a bit over 200k

That only new players... you know TTK is a Expansion and not a new game... if you have Desitny why you will buy other disc?

Please save BS like that. You have absolutely no way of knowing that all 913k of those sales are to new players. And in fact because of the pricing, it makes sense for people who only own vanilla Destiny or just one previous expansion to buy the $60 TTK bundle because it saves money. So a much safer bet would be a large chunk of those sales are people giving the game a second chance. I for example only own the vanilla Destiny digital version. It would cost me $35 to buy the expansion pass, then $40 for TTK. Why do that and pay $75 when I can pay $60 and get whatever exclusive cosmetic bullsh they threw in? You know this.

Anyways, I think the main thing that affected the sales was competition. Yeah, Halo 3 obliterated all other Halo games and did it with around the same userbase, maybe a little higher than Xbone, maybe lower. But it had the biggest marketing push I have ever seen for a game. You could pull up to a 7-11 to pump some gas and the pump would remind you that on launch day you could buy Halo 3 inside the store. Ridiculous. But mostly, it launched before CoD became a huge thing. Not just competition from other games, but other platforms. 360 bodied the PS3 in the US. Dominated it. Where do shooters sell the most? The US. Now the Xbone is a million or whatever behind the PS4 in the US. And the PS4 is now the dudebro shooter platform. So sales will be a lot more spread out, which means less shooter fans to buy Halo.

You have smaller contributing factors. MCC leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths. Fans being digusted by the changes 343 made (LOL @ the idea that real Halo fans would dislike 343's changes so would flock to Destiny), and general franchise fatigue. I think the negativity surrounding the sales has been hilarious, though.

1- Destiny

Plain and simple, in my opinion

People got tired of futuristic shooters...

I said it after E3 and had a few people tell me I was wrong but the anticipation for Halo 5 was noticeably less than for Halo 4. Previous Halo entries screamed "epic", while Halo 5 felt more like "further adventures in the Halo universe starring Master Chief and Friends!" The vibe was much different and I don't think it made many non-hardcore Halo fans consider it a must-play game.

This, I think, is what happens when a publisher basically tells you that this series is going to go on forever. You lose that sense of meaningfulness.

I don't think that is entirely true. I mean, It's a estabilished franchise, who wants to play Halo will eventually buy it no matter what

And yet sold shity tons copies... why? It is a success no matter how bad you think it is... the most sussceful new IP this gen and the expectation for Destiny 2 are to become the one of the big one sellers like CoD.

Review has nothing to do with that... Destiny took a lot of "fan" base from Halo.

Even after Halo 5 launch I saw a lot of gamers playing Desitny on Xbone... CoD, Fallout and Battlefront affected more the player activiity in Destiny than Halo 5 and at reset days they are coming back yet... a lot of player on Xbone back this week to play Iron Banner for example.

Something Destiny is doing right, no?

And yes I believe it took a lot of Halo fanbase mostly due Bungie... people like more Bungie than i343 for example... you can't left Destiny out in any discussion about "why Halo 5 sold bad compared with previous titles?"... Destiny is one key point... more than MCC issues, lack of split-screen, etc.

Its a new IP relying doing the same old thing. Bungie left saying they didn't want to just make Halo games, but the truth is they wanted to own Halo so they cloned it.

At its core, Destiny is a Halo game except you grind shitty levels over and over. Also some of the worst PvP compared to Halo games. It was one of the most hyped games of the generation and did poor among critics because it sucked. To stimulate sales the game hit the bargain bin rather quickly as well. Good sales doesn't change the fact it was an incredibly disappointing game. It doesn't look like Taken King is bringing in a lot of people either.

You say Destiny took fans from Halo... but maybe some people play both? Shooting fans play shooting games. Your anecdotal evidence isn't worth much to me. My anecdotal evidence shows people got tired of Destiny and didn't buy Taken King.

People complain about Halo 5 and say 343 sucks. But last I checked Halo 5 is better product than Bungie's current game. Even if the Halo 5 campaign was short, it was more satisfying than what Destiny has offered. Destiny is a poorly executed Halo MMO.

I pre ordered Destiny simply because it was a new shooter by Bungie. If that was a Halo game, people would have said Bungie sucks now and gave it even lower scores for no split screen. :-p

1. TTK sold amazing good...  it is a expansion that shows gamers wants more Destiny...

September NPD (bundles included): 713k
October NPD (bundles included): a bit over 200k

That only new players... you know TTK is a Expansion and not a new game... if you have Desitny why you will buy other disc?

Are you sure about what you wrote here?

2. Yes I beleive Bungies fans follwed Destiny instead Halo even on Xbone... and no matter if it is casual or youngers (not true because I play with die hard old Halo fans on Destiny).

3. Just look at your friend list to see people are playing Destiny (I'm sure if you have a Halo friend list you will find a lot of them playing Destiny)... and yes it is anedoctal.

4. No matter how the game is people are playing and liking it... btw the activies are well divided because you can play only PVP too... Bungie give us stats about what people play in Destiny and PVE and PVP are pretty close to each other... Iron Banner this week make the online play list back to old Destiny days before CoD, Fallout and Battlefront launch.

5. I played all Halo games included the last one called Halo 5... and I have different views of the quality of the old titles... Halo 2 campaign is way better than 4 or 5 for me... 3 is the best overall game and ODST is an amazing expansion... Reach have the best PVP modes to be fair.

Well I guess we disagree a lot.

But it is a no brainer Destiny took a lot of users from Halo even on Xbone.

TTK did not sell "amazing good." Its doing okay on X1 and PS4. Last gen players don't seem to care about it much. Getting us to buy Destiny was easy, getting us to come back... not so much.

I think a lot of people who played Destiny are Halo fans either now or at some point. However, I think die hard fans opted for X1 because it has Destiny and Halo. And for the reccord, most people who bought Destiny aren't playing Destiny anymore. Destiny is just something that came and went, its just not relevant in a significant way even between four consoles.

Maybe Halo declined because people have lost interest in Halo. Its also possible some Halo fans are waiting for the holidays. CoD and BF have declined, what do you blame for that? What game gets credit for those IPs decline? Also, what racer is gonna get credit for GT6's failure? Did GT fans move to Driveclub?

Is it just me, or does the industry seem to experiencing shooter fatigue? All the big FPS franchises seem to be down this gen, and I don't see any new games taking their place. Except for destiny, I guess, but I dunno if that's big enough to explain everything.

It'll be interesting to see if Gears 4 is able to defy this trend next year.

Also, with these sales numbers, I wonder if M$ will have 343i branch out a bit after Halo 6. Maybe into new IP's, or at the very least new genres in the Halo universe.
