Forums - Gaming Discussion - Five Games That Define You as a Gamer and/or a Person

Hey Guys,

I thought this would be a good forum topic game.  Basically, choose five games and write about how it has influenced your life as a gamer and person.  I'll start!

Super Mario Brothers:

I got my first console with Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt packed in with it and my life as a gamer was pretty much set the first time I picked up the controller to play Super Mario Brothers.  I remember playing with my Dad, my cousins, and my friends as we controlled Mario and Luigi through all the worlds.  It helped get me through some pretty rough times in my early life as well.

Ultima IV:  Quest of the Avatar:

Me and my cousins got the NES version of this game for Christmas back in the mid 90s.  Although we already had an SNES at the time, this game still kept us captivated.  I thought it did an awesome job of teaching you to follow the various virtues and what they were.  I remember I would recite the 8 or so virtues before going to bed and always tried my best to uphold them in my everyday life.  It was also my first exposure to RPG games which has influenced me for the past 20 years or so.

Castlevania III:  Dracula's Curse:

My first exposure to this, overall, awesome series.  I remember being the best out of all my cousins and friends and they would watch me and cheer me on as I played.  I spent countless hours trying to beat this game, because it had branching paths and different usable characters.  I remember when I was finally able to overcome Dracula and defeat all his three forms.  Such an epic experience when I was so little.  Of course, Symphony of the Night is a wonderful game as well, but didn't have the same influence to me as Dracula's Curse since I was so young and impressionable back then.

Final Fantasy VI:

In my opinion, the best Final Fantasy game to date.  Final Fantasy VII comes close but the characters and music in VI helps it get my vote.  Again, I played through much of it with my cousins and friends.  We all took turns while the others watched.  Whenever we were stuck, we had to collectively put our brains together to try and figure out various puzzles.  I remember arguing at times but we finally managed to get through it together.  I would revisit Final Fantasy VI several times by myself throughout the years, and I believe it still holds up.

Metal Gear Solid:

I was blown away when I first saw my cousin play this game.  It was almost just as fun watching and listening to experience the story with him as he played.  I then borrowed it from and and played through it myself.  Later on, I would have a bunch of conversations with a friend debating on what Metal Gear Solid 2 would be about when it was announced.  We were both way off (Sneaky Kojima!) but it was fun to speculate regardless.

Wow, I already chose 5.  I didn`t even get to go into the PS2/PS3/PC but I think I'll stop here.  There are of course more I could add, but they will have to wait another day.

So, what about you?  What 5 games help influence your life?

Final Fantasy VII:

While I was gaming on Nintendo consoles and PC before, I truly became a gaming fan with this game. This game blew me away with the great visuals, music, content and story. Not only that, I would them go on to play FF8-FF10, Chrono Trigger, FF4-FF6 and many other JRPGs. I haven't been excited for a game since FFXIII killed the franchise sadly.

Shadow of the Colossus:
First game I got when I got back into gaming and there simply was nothing like this anywhere else. It is the definition of epic in a video game form. I got so engrossed in this game and its mysteries and loved running around on Agro.

I've only put 2 because there are only 2.

I definitely would have out Shadow of the Colossus on my list as well if I made it to the ps2 era. I guess I got too caught up in the nostalgia of the older games. Such a fantastic experience though.

Hmm, this is a nice thread. I had to give some thought on what games really define me as a person.

1 - Sonic the Hedgehog

I was kind of wild and crazy as a kid. I had a lot of energy and liked to move a lot. I liked running and racing things, running against the bus after school. So when Sonic came around, I fell in love with the character. I felt I wanted to be like him, very fast and very cool. When I ran, I tried to run fast, hoping I can be fast like Sonic. I also started drawing with Sonic. I would get the old Archie comic books and was really facinated with it. I tried drawing him, and met a friend who drew as well, and kind of became a rival. Sonic was what may have moved me the path of drawing.

2 - Dr. Robotic's Mean Bean Machine (Puyo Puyo) / Tetris Attack (Panel De Pon)

I put both of these together because they are somewhat similar, and also drove my love of puzzle games. For one reason or another, I rented Mean Bean and really enjoyed it. Something about making slimes fall on each other in careful set ups was very exciting for me, and crushing my enemies in clear blocks was very exciting. I played a lot, and my love for the game grew with it. Later, I learned of Tetris Attack from a friend, and played it. It was somewhat similar to Mean Bean, and forming large chains from x4 to x9 to even ??? was so soooo exciting. I eventually bought the game, where I would play it everyday for a month, before I got busy with other things. I sometimes pop it in and those feelings of joy rush into me when ever I do : ) These 2 were the start of my love of puzzles.

3 - Kirby Super Star

Anyone who knows me well may say I am funny, interesting, and weird, but most of all, very happy, almost always smiling. If there is one character I feel I can relate with when it comes to being happy and cheerful, it's Kirby. This cute guy is almost always happy, and nothing seems to get him down. He marches on, having fun adventures where ever he goes, and he is happy. And that is how I feel. Kirby is someone I feel I can relate to.

4 - Minecraft

If there is one thing I loved doing as a kid, it was building. I used to play with Legos all the time, making all sorts of cool things. I tried making as much as I could with my pieces. I even wanted to be an architect at some point. So when Minecraft came around, I stayed away, because I knew it was a game made for me. It was so fitting, I was afraid of playing it, fearing I could lose myself to it, and was I right. I bought it eventually and fell in love. I tried building many things, from homes, to castles, to bottled ships in the sky. It was a perfect fit for me, and defines a part of me pretty well.

5 - Undertale

As I have stated before, I am a pretty silly and light hearted person. I like to chat with people, make jokes, and laugh with other. I just like having a good time and get a long. Undertale feels like that sort of thing for me. I felt myself really enjoying the characters, as if they were friends I have met along time ago, just catching up and having fun. Some of the characters may be kind of scary, but they are like people too with their own feelings, thoughts and needs, and you just need to talk to them and get to know them. Then you learn they are not so bad, and are pretty great. So yeah, Undertale. Feels like it fits a part of me.

And that is my 5. I feel I can do a 6th or 7th, haha...

1. Final Fantasy

2. Halo

Final Fantasy VI:
This was the game that pretty much changed my entire outlook on gaming. Before, games were just a time-killing device. It was fun but I had no special attachment to it. After picking up FF6 from a used games shop, however, I learned that a videogame could actually be interesting. From the very opening, playing FF6 for the first time was an awesome and joyous experience that led directly to my love of RPGs.

ICO:
This is the game that woke me up to the potential of the medium. It blew other games away in terms of emotional engagement. I treasure my first time playing as something special.

Fallout 3:
Talk about a game pulling you into it's world. I spent hundreds of hours and had a blast exploring and working on my character's place in that society. That, to me, is what makes a role-playing game.

Gran Turismo:
I still vividly remember my first time playing. That first course with the Skylines, where you raced on an island. I kept losing over and over on the last turn. I finally got the braking down, won the match, and that was it for me, there was no escaping. Gran Turismo isn't even about winning, it's about improving yourself as a player, about finding the best way around a track. That really resonated with me.

Final Fantasy Tactics:
I loved the tactical gameplay so much that I spent hours and hours making sure I'd seen and done everything the game had to offer. I collected every character, every weapon, every item. Had there been more to do, I would have kept playing. On top of that, the ruthlessness of the characters was something you didn't see in videogames often, which made the storyline seem a lot more dangerous than most. One of the best games I've ever played.

Screw it, I'm going with a 6th.

6 - Saints Row 2

This game represents my dark side. Behind this cheerful act and smile lies a dark side, where I let loose all my negative feelings onto this game. This is where I can do all the bad: attack people on the streets, drive like a mad man, drive off the highest cliff and do flips, run over people, shoot people for fun, and break all the rules, all to raise money just cause hell. And I can dress and act like the coolest and meanest person, and not give a care about it. This game lets me release my inner dark side. >:D Mau haa haa haa....

...But I'm really a nice person overall, honestly... >w>;

Wonderful 101-
Im always willing to try something a bit different and this game is no exeption. Unique control method, epic boss battles, humour and the feeling of pure achievement when you finally pull off those flashy unite combos.

Xenoblade Chronicles-
Best game on the Wii hands down. A large beautiful world which demands total exploration, cant wait for the sequel

Wave Race Blue Storm-
Always been a fan of the pick up and play arcade racer, and im a sucker for brilliant water effects.

Super Mario 3D World
To me this is the perfect platformer. It has tight controls, hidden collectables, variety, local multiplayer and dazzling gameplay.

Zelda Windwaker HD
My favourite Zelda game. I've plumped for the Wii U version because this is the definitive way to experience this masterpiece. Timeless art style, great dungeons and lots of islands to explore.

Killzone Shadowfall
Superb FPS, and although im not a graphics whore, this games is one of the best looking console games out there. The lighting is superb.

Uncharted 2
Cinematic gaming at its best. Huge set pieces, high octane action, great story telling and brilliant voice acting.

Sonic the Hedgehog-
Slick, speedy, and ultra cool at the time. This was the first time a game gave some serious competition to Mario, which was unfortunately short lived.
