I find it funny that Microsoft claimed that they found genuinely support the Xbox 360 for at least 10 years. When was the last 1st party Xbox 360 exclusive even released?

Tomb raider came out on 360

We owe them the very weak gen 8 consoles. They showed us and Sony that only cheap hardware sells. If they would've let Sony dominate with their $600 we'd have a PS4 with proper hardware in it.

No, Sony could have put a cutting edge GPU in PS4 and sold it at a huge loss. PS3 was sold at a massive loss.

The problem with PS3 is the console was really expensive but the games looked about the same as 360 games. It had Bluray and a mega powerful CPU... yet the same graphics as 360. They should have invested more in GPU and less in CPU.

Actually the PS3 GPU was weaker in some ways. Cell was brute force and at the same time a 'dumb' design, from the beginning intended to do some graphics work.

Basically the opposite of what is done today.

Blu Ray is a thing. Going for a PS3 with Blu Ray helped Sony massively winning the HD-format war. It made the PS3 expensive for some time which increased their loss per console. But in the end Sony won against HD-DVD partially due to selling millions of Blu Ray players (aka PS3).

What does support mean for you? Only first party exclusives?

Xbox 360 was a great machine. Even until recently it got plenty of use as an HD Comcast Cable Box.

Arguments can be made why Bluray in PS3 was a good idea. Did it benefit games in a significant way? Not really, 360 was fine sticking with DVDs. Especially when 360 began using a disc as installion data and other discs as play data.

It seems like the real reason PS3 was so expensive was the Cell processor. It was an incredibly powerful CPU, so much so that PS3 was even used as a cheap super computer. However, did the Cell benefit games in a significant way? Fuck no, a complete waste of money for Sony. They should have used a cheap processer with a common arcitecture. Those resources would have been better spent on a powerful GPU.

Sony could have made money of Cell in their medical technology division. IBM tried or actually did, not sure right now.
In the end Cell was a big failure. To expensive for Toshiba in the long run while IBM had to do a ton of changes for PowerXcell. And the overall design was totally outdated within a few years.
Today you'd go with a GPGPU for anything the SPE's where meant to do.
That's also the reason why it wouldn't have made sense to put Cell into the PS4 at all. It's terribly slow in some ways and where it was fast you don't need it anymore.

With Sony adding the dedicated GPU late in development, all the systems issues and what MS actually did with the 360 the latter one actually is the more sophisticated design.

Happy birthday, PlayStation 3!!

.... uh, this is the PS3 thread, right?
