Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Can Read PS2 Discs? (Trophy Patent)

I think it's about time we revisited this because it's clearly going to be used with PS2 emulation. But if this is related, it would suggest the PS4 can read PS2 discs:

A method and apparatus for adding trophy support games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game. The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored.

The PS5 Exists.

I'm bumping and changing the title because people don't seem to be understanding what this could mean.

This would be so freaking amazing!!!!!
This would make me play all my PS2 games again for trophys.

Disk could just refer to the hard drive disk. The data is the same, just on a different support.

Why wouldn't it be able to? They are just DVD's.

That's pretty cool, this could mean that they wouldn't have to manually add trophies to each game and that they could make a vast majority of PS2 games available right away.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Wondering why emulation took so long to come about? Trophy lists. Lots and lots of trophy lists. My guess, anyway.

This could be PS3 functionality for early PS3 games that had no trophies?

Sifting through the code and game saves to work out how to place Trophies? Makes sense.

Yet Star Ocean 3 has them already... like 300 of them, conversion there might be easy.

Hmm, pie.

Nothing of this patent says anything about discs. It's just adding trophy functionality to the emulation.
