Forums - Gaming Discussion - When Will the Frame Rate Standard Go Beyond 60fps?

In the year 2015, if you buy a television or a PC monitor, it's extremely unlikely that its refresh rate will be anything but 60Hz.  So knowing that nearly everyone has a 60Hz television, developers would never try to make console games to go beyond 60fps, as it would be a waste of resources that could go towards other things (PC games are of course a different story).  So I wanted us to think, when will we see the frame rate "standard" go above 60fps?  I know that guessing a year is rather arbitrary, but we can discuss things such as the priority of developments for display technologies, and other things that can make for a worthwhile discussion.  Just don't spam the thread by saying something like "we will never need to go beyond 60fps."  This is an inevitable change.  The question is when.

 

I personally am excited for the day when all televisions and monitors start at something like 120fps.  That will be awesome.

I think frame rate increases generally have significant diminishing returns after 60 fps for standard gaming.

THAT SAID, 120 fps might start to become standard with VR, as it is supposedly more immersive and less motion sickness-inducing.



I have tried gaming beyond 60fps I didn't like it at all, but with VR that may be a different story.

The moment it happens, I will want games to run at that framerate.

That being said, not for a long time. TVs don't need to run faster than 60Hz. Most content runs at 24fps, and the things that don't like sports and soap operas have no demand for faster monitors. Console games won't force the change since most are optimized to run at 30fps even still.



Not entirely sure what you guys are talking about, 120hz smart tvs have been a thing for years and we even have a select few that run at 240hz. This doesn't even take into consideration plasma TVs - that operate at an insane 500hz.

Personally I would not buy a modern day TV if it only had a 60hz rating. That's something I consider a big deal and it directly impacts the lag between what the console outputs and what you're actually seeing.

If you really care about framerate so much that 120 hz would impact your gameplay, you should go back to using CRT TVs, since progressive scan TVs have a visual lag. :P

Frame rate isn't so important that it should be placed above everything.



120 HZ monitors and 240 HZ monitors have been around for a long time.

120 FPS is bound to be the standard eventually.

It absolutely shoud be blaced above everything. Gameplay feel in a game is most important.



Game developers will always find new and innovative ways to keep the framerate down. I believe some don't even know that it's possible to go beyond 60.

Mark my words, next gen we will still have plenty of games running at 30fps.

I mean to say that you act as if there is no point at which increasing the framerate becomes effectively useless. I argue that there are severe diminishing returns in the perceived smoothness of animation after 60 FPS, and that those resources would be better spent elsewhere.
