What I'm saying is that if Nintendo ever got to the point that the OP is describing to need to merge with another company.  The Nintendo we know today would cease to exist and yes I'm stating that most of Nintendo's core franchises would not make the transition simply because Playstation and Xbox gamers generally look at Mario games as kiddie. Just look at what most people on the Internet do with Mario in UE4, it's nothing appealing to the franchise for sure. People who think that Nintendo wouldn't work with Disney or Apple probably haven't heard the news of them working with Universal Studios then.

But what you say about what Playstation and xbox gamers think about Nintendo titles are irrelevant. Where do you think Nintendo fans would go if Nintendo merged with either Sony or MS? They would obviously either buy a PLaystation or an xbox, to play Nintendo games. Or do you think all those Nintendo fans would just cease to exist, or decide to quit gaming all together? Because that's the only way sales of core Nintendo franchises would drop if such a merger were to happen.

Also, if Nintendo had to pick a few franchises to work with, from sales, I can assure you Mario would be one of them, while Metroid wouldn't.

They would most likely buy a Nintendo handheld device to get their Nintendo games or is the OP suggesting that Nintendo would just magically cease to exist in hardware altogether... If Nintendo were forced to make most of their current core franchises look realistic for the sake of being on Playstation or Xbox systems, yes they would likely lose the people who are currently buying their software. Most people buy Nintendo games because they are fun and different from what the others provide, if that's lost then there's really no reason to buy their games anymore...

Why would Nintdndo's core franchises be forced to look realistic just because they released on Playstation/Xbox? There is absolutely no reason for that. It's just silly. Do you think Sony/MS would completely vaste the value of those IPs just for fun? Heck, even assuming that for some inceomprehensibly stupid reason Sony/MS wanted to try and force Nintendo to make realistic games from their core IPs, you don't thinkNintendo would have any as to what they want to develop? And that is ignoring the fact that neither Sony nor MS would force Nintendo to make the games realistic.

Because boringly realistic games are the best seeling ones on PlayStation and Xbox (Call of Duty, Fifa, Madden NFL, etc.).

Nobody would've bought Uncharted, The Last of Us or Gears of War if they were cartoony like Mario.

So basically you think Sony/MS are complete idiots and would try to forcefully change Nintendo IP's artstyle into one that doesn't fit, doesn't make sense and would hurt sales. You know that both Sony and MS release games that aren't realistic?

Realistic artstyle both fits and makes sense for the three franchises you listed. It doesn't with Mario.

Once again because these are the types of games that sell on these systems! This isn't even a theory at this point, Nintendo style games or anything similar don't sell on Microsoft or Sony platforms. FFXV doesn't even look like a Final Fantasy game because it's trying to draw in a bigger audience that only cares about the games visuals. If Nintendo should have as much say in what they create as you suggest then my guess is that Nintendo would just stay in the hardware business at that point...

It would probably go 3rd Party if anything...

Though between the 2, Sony + Nintendo seems more likely than with Microsoft

Then how do you explain the non-realistic games that both Microsoft and Sony make?

You can't get a grittier Mario than Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, though.

I wish Nintendo would make a new Paper Mario game in the style of TTYD..
