Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Let's think about backwards compatiblity and what it really means

This is not about the game list. It's basically about what the the BC and the way MS did it really means for the future. And for Xbox.

The way MS did BC is pretty important though. If you're really interested about the how to you'll find enough lengthy explanations elesewhere. Important here is, they found an easy method to 'translate' the OS and games from IBM Power to x86.

Why is that important? Well, basically it should be possible to get 360 games working on any Windows based system that fulfills some minimum requirements.

And the same actually applies to Xbox One games. So the next Xbox might have no issues running Xbox 360 and Xbox One games.

Now, what is Xbox? Xbox is a gaming console, right? It was a console in the original Xbox days. Today it's actually a gaming service with dedicated hardware for most games. Not for all though, because you also have Xbox on Windows PC's and Windows phones. So what if all that really gets united in the future?
Microsoft makes money from games and Xbox Live, not the hardware. So actually they don't want hardware sales to grow but XBL and Xbox game sales.

Sure, some people want their home consoles. But that already is a PC with custom Windows. It's not a desktop where you can change your graphics card or CPU, nonetheless it's a PC.

Others might want Halo or Forza on PC. Streaming from Xbox One to PC is a small step here. But it might not be the final step. Your PC is Xbox certified? So go and play all Xbox games on PC, get direct access to the store...

Then there's the smartphone. MS isn't one of the big players right now. It's one of the underdogs. And phones will always be behind the big guys in terms of power. So what? Stream from your Xbox, if you don't have one, use the [s]force[/c] power of the cloud and if it's only a direct stream. Take your phone to your friends house, connect it wireless to the TV and stream your games while playing with an Xbox controller? It's not really that farfetched.

Sounds like someone put something in my coffee? Crossbuy between Win Phone and Win Home already is a reality for quite some time. And XBox on those devices is a reality too. And yes, Xbox has become more of a gaming service than actual hardware if you think about it. And again yes, what MS has done with 360 BC and Xbox One system architecture will make it way easier for future devices to run all the old stuff.

So after i used all my left ands, think about it.
