Forums - Gaming Discussion - 60Fps - is it really that important?

Is 60 fps just placebo?

Many people (mostly pc gamers) are always bashing consoles for 30 fps.

To be honest, I made some "tests" to test myself and have to admit, i dont notice any differences.

I also read many people talking about the new Twilight Princess HD remaster game and they are claiming, the game would run in 60 fps - like windwaker hd did.

In fact, windwaker HD run on 30-20 fps. Still people believe its 60 fps. Same with games like Hyrule Warriors.

Apparently it does, since games try to reach 60FPS and boast when they do these days.

Personally, I don't really care. What matters always is if it's fun. x )

Yup, the most. Graphics need to step back for it.

You only notice the difference when you play 60fps over a longer period of time and then you have to go back to frame drop hell. Also you need proper test material. 60fps =/= smooth gameplay. There are certain games where the average fps might be 60 or above but they're still choppy as fuck due to high variance of frame times. That's why a 30fps game can feel smoother than fps between 50-70 because it has more constant frame times. That's not the norm however.

The next thing is that you basically have double the input lag on 30fps. I tried Driveclub and while it was running relatively smooth I had a very hard time due to high input lag. Same with Rocket League which rarely comes close to 60fps.

Also, it doesn't stop at 60fps. That's just an arbitrary line due to traditional display refresh rates. More is always better. People who have played for a long time on PC with powerful GPUs are used to 100 or more frames and will be able to tell the difference between that and and 60 fps. 60fps doesn't mean infinitely smooth.

Another new factor is G-Sync/freesync which basically removes choppy frames caused by the display refresh rate, smoothing the picture even further without the issue of tearing.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

If i put the same game in 30fps and 60fps side by side i can see a difference.but if i only have a game in 30fps or 60 pfs i wouldn't know if it's 30fps or 60fps

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

60 Frames isn't as important as its made out to be, having a solid frame rate is the key. 2015 we shouldn't be getting games that dip and slow down, they should be optimised to the very best, if a game needs to dip then clearly the dev is aiming too high.

60 Frames is important to some genres like FPS where is actually makes a difference to how a game plays compared to a game like Tomb Raider which at a solid 30 it doesn't really need to be 60.

At the end of the day, a game running at 60 is better then a game running at 30. Does it justify a purchase if it cant reach 60? Sure, a game can still be good at 30, just not below.

You would if you played 10h in 60fps and then go back to 30fps.

It really isnt.
Unless its a online multiplayer first person shooter type game.

Most of the time Id much rather have good graphics.

I'd say it definitely matters. I'd much rather have a game be 720p @60fps than 1080p @30fps.

This, very much this. It's not just about how it looks, it's also about how it feels. 30 FPS often has more input lag (in fact, in a simple case, it could be twice as much as 60 FPS).
