Forums - PC Discussion - Valve says Steam Machines are better than gaming consoles

Bollocks.

Alienware's $450 Steam machine is the cheapest one, and that 860M inside it is not faster than PS4's GPU (close in some games, but note there really).

It is faster that XOne though, so they're only Half-Lying.

Faster on paper. We don't how well games are gonna run on it. I'd rather have a slower machine with well optimized games.

To be fair to Gabe, online play is free on steam machines, gaming for 5 years on the PS4 will add $250 to the total amount paid (and $300 to X1?)

This doesn't sound like it will outperform consoles

$450 for Intel Core i3 Dual-Core processor, an NVIDIA Geforce GTX with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, 4GB of DDR3L system RAM

That seems to be the cheapest, does that include a controller?
For a product supposedly going on sale in 4 days, where are the details?

A very easy tell. If it's not specifying which GPU, it probably outperforms nothing.

But yes, an i3 with a GTX760 with 2GB will most likely outperform a PS4. Maybe even a 750.

The issue with SteamBox is that it's licensed hardware functionally (I don't think hardware manufacturers are paying anything per box to Valve to run SteamOS), but not using standardized parts, so prices and specs will vary from vendor to vendor even when comparing "comparable" price tiered models.

I suppose one could just google "cheapest Steam Machine" and see what kind of specs that buys and for how much.

I checked the Steam store, there are no more details available atm for that $450 Alienware machine.

The next one up does list actual specs
http://www.sybergaming.com/products/steam-machine.aspx
  $499 I3-4160 4GB DDR3 GTX 750 1GB GDDR5
  $729 I5-4460 8GB DDR3 GTX 960 2GB GDDR5
$1419 I7 4GHZ 16GB DDR3 GTX 980 4GB GDDR5
(comes with mini keyboard + touch pad but no controller)

The $729 should easily outperform the ps4, depending on game optimization of course.

They will come down in price anyway, the box looks nice enough for under the tv.

Valve is wrong.

The act of desperation ...

Considering the lower machines won't, and will still be more expensive, they are actually lying.

Of course a $5000 one will have way better specs, though.

Still, nothing is stealling PS4 thunder this gen, nothing.

I'm hoping the NX does...hoping. If all rumors are to be believed about it Japan and US will jump all over it...once again I hope, lol.

OT: The Steam boxes can out preform all they want, the graphics will still need to be scalled to fit your box and M$, Sony, and Nintendo have great UI's and games that will never be on the others.

Make it So.

Funny thing is the exact same Alienware (Alpha) with Windows, Steam integration and XBox controller for $400 on Amazon - so I really don't undertand why would anyone pick SteamOS version vs Windows, given how limited in games SteamOS is.

What are you hearing about the NX that will make people jump over it?

Last I checked this gen everyone has their own kind of thunder.

Also super surprised (not as much) to see some folk going well out of their way to look up the specs and throw anything at them.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

Yeah, right now limiting yourself to SteamOS might not be the best idea. At least you get the new controller with it.
It's good that they come out now so they're in their 3rd generation by the time the consoles get old. 2017 would be a good time to get one I think. The cheap ones might not be better yet, but they will be, and it will be interesting to see if they will have any effect on the next generation of consoles. Start of next gen, $499 console with a small launch library vs a $399 Steam machine with thousands of cheap games, that's when the real battle starts.
