They never make games like their competitors, maybe until the NES days.

Smash Bros. is their fighting game like Splatoon is their shooter.

Pokken Tournament is a bit like the Naruto or DBZ fighting games.

It's a spin-off developed by a third-party company like Hyrule Warriors.

Smash Bros. 4 is made by the same company as Pokken.

I don't see Punch-Out as good source material for a fighting game, let alone one to compete with Tekken or Street Fighter. These other games contain a multitude of different fighting disciplines from a variety of diverse characters, whereas Punch-Out is all about boxing, with a bunch of stereotypes offering different takes on a single discipline.

On top of that, Punch-Out remains such a unique concept in this day and age that it would be a shame for Nintendo to turn it into another, more popular genre.

But I would never turn down Nintendo doing a new IP, so I would certainly love to see them do their own take on a more hardcore fighter without the constraints of a pre-existing IP. I wouldn't really consider Smash Bros a fighting game, since the game is at its best when its doing things at odds with the genre. The 4 player, item filled, random chaos of Smash is nothing like well-balanced fighters like Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter.

LOL no never stupid idea etc.

If anything they should build on it as a boxing game. They really lack.

Mike Tyson Punch out was my favourite, then the next one that kind of got there for me was knockout kings then Rocky boxing game with it's story mode. A cool short story mode be awesome. Base it on hajime no ippo even lol

smash is the only game they NEED. If they really want to win back the fighting crowd (of which they there is none on the wii u), they need:

a) traditional controller
b) embrace the competitive scene
c) get back support from long standing fighting game IP such as tekken, soulcalibre, and street fighter (probably not likely, but it would also help to have mortal kombat and DC universe fighting games)

Well, unlike the shooter example you mentioned (splatoon), fighting is a genre decreasing in popularity. Also, they already have Smash and now Pokkén... there's no need for another fighter, I believe.

The decreasing popularity comment simply isn't true. The fighting game renaissance has been going strong since SFIV, and there's no data that I've seen that can suggest it's in a decline again. Just throwing that out there. Everything else I agree with in your comment.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

They already made a great fighter to compete with those 2. It's called Super Smash Bros x )

Punch-Out is nothing like those games.

Rebooting Punch-Out into a traditional fighter would also be a terrible idea, IMO.

Why do they need a fighting game to compete with tekken and street fighter though? If anything they need a huge FPS to compete with Halo. I remember the glory days when Nintendo were kings of Console shooters.

And all thanks to Goldeneye and Rare!

I think Smash is enough, and with Pokken coming out soon, it's probably good enough imo
