About damned time!

Actually it's best to be positive. I'm happy to see a re-commitment to the principle reason this site exists. It's great that there is now an apprentice chart-meister and I think almost everyone has a great deal of respect for Machina and is confident in his integrity and genuineness of his efforts.

In a time of transition of responsibilities and transfer of skills and competencies there will always be mis-steps and glitches. What's important is to know that there is now a clear commitment to delivering on the core purpose of this website and what makes it a uniquely interesting website to frequent, which facilitates gaming industry analytical discussions that are simply not possible on other gaming websites. During this difficult period of a lack of up-to-date data it has been very hard to engage in these analytical discussions and I look forward to a return to these sorts of topics.

I think the idea of "open source" community data collection that can help refine the accuracy of data is a good one. I think more transparency, especially around adjustments can only be a good thing. I would actually like the "data team" to open an adjustments thread whenever adjustments are made to outline the additional sources of data, especially community sourced data, that contributed to the adjustments. Doesn't have to be specific like "Michael Pachter told me...", can just be "additional industry analyst data". Transparency, without giving the game away, is always a good thing for enhancing site credibility.

Please tell me how do you track numbers that are exclusive to one source and devs may get solely their numbers without doing anything illegal, I'm really curious.

If I knew, I'd be selling the information. It's not up to me to find out, but Steamspy or whatever proves that it's doable.

It's kind of different though. They just scan steam users libraries and add up the amount of people with each game. It might be possible to do the same with PSN/XBL but obviously those would include physical games too so it would just give you total owners, not specifically digital. And then with used games or people sharing games the total owners would also be higher, much higher in some cases, than the actual number sold. Physical sales are negligible at best on PC and used games don't really exist so it doesn't throw the numbers out by as much there.

Trophy/achievement tracking sites have proved it is possible to scan PSN/XBL accounts, but like I said the ownership numbers from those are going to be significantly less accurate than those from steam.

Indeed, these things tell you how many people have played the game, not how many people purchased the game. There's not just game sharing, but there's multiple accounts on a single console playing the same game.

Wowser Bowser! This is awesome news. Thank you Machina, your hard work is much appreciated by us all. s2

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

One thing is to, eventually, outline a performance criteria for yourselves, once you've established a routine and are happy with how things are running. Nothing like creating your own expectations to hold yourself to account and letting people know how you aim to perform. If your aim is 90% of the time to to publish global sales data for a week within 7 days of the end of the week then put that out there as what you plan to try to achieve. If you give yourself a 90% performance target then it means hitting a slow patch for a short time is OK because as long as you are meeting the 90% over a, say, 4-month moving window, then all is right with the world.

Of course you should not nail yourselves down to any such thing for quite a while yet until you have a really good idea of what your BAU processes can consistently deliver.

Wow, thanks! I'm excited to see regular updates! :)

I noticed that the overall charts do not reflect the global sales for the 8/15/15 week. Does that have to be manually pushed?

The hardware's been updated to 29th Aug already.

Sorry - I meant the software charts.  :D

fantastic news, good luck Machina if there is anything that could be done to help I'm sure there are many on this site who would gladly offer their time.
