Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anita Sarkeesian: An Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review

Not the most horrible review I've come across. Unity was a broken game but it got plenty of 90s, 80s, etc. Likewise, she is not a good reviewer, but evidently, so many others follow suit. Yet, by far the most common topic in these forums when a new game releases is its overall score on metacritic. Not the reviews, not the game, nope, just the number that shows up on metacritic.com

Anita did touch on the flaws of the game; more of the same, dumb AI, weak story, and most importantly, she didn't give a numeric score.

I feel like lots of you came in here rushing to hate regardless of how good or bad the content presented is.

Why?

"Worst review ever"

Not even close

"I am not going to give her a view"

Insightful

"Oh dear, so that con artist has actually started reviewing games, from her 'oh look at me, poor victimized woman' perspective...not that I believe for one second that she actually plays any of them."

Awesome

"Would anyone post a summary or is just feminism bs? Pretty useless review? Will they count her score for metacritic, won't care."

What's this?

"Oh for the love of god, when will this chick just fall off the face of the earth? Her "Men bad, women good" shtick has gotten stale already."

Pure class.

Don't take what I said out of context and tell me to be careful with my accusation, it's hardly an accusation. Is it a bad review? It is. Nothing to get worked up over either. Not within a community that worships metascores regardless of the quality of the reviews behind these scores, at least.

Because people talking about the review, or anita is kinda the point of why a forum exists, to bring up a topic and talk about it, you might not like what others have to say about it, however when it goes from making comments about a video or the person that made it, to making comments about other users in the thread, you move into sticky territory in that you are skirting the rules of the forum.

It has nothing to do with taking what you say out of context, and everything to do with giving you a fair warning.

And yes, implying that certain users came in to the thread with a predisposition to hate on the video in question, regardless of how true that may be, is making an accusation.

Wow. I didn't actually realize you were issuing a warning. I didn't realize What I said was insulting in any shape or form. Far worse things happen and go unnoticed around here, far worse than describing what might be happening in this thread. Whatever, I guess. I am not that invested in Anita or her fans/haters.

So she cares about videogames now?

What a fraud.

So here is the thing on that. The rules of the forums are all fine and good but I'm going to call a spade a spade. It's really not an accusation, its just a fact that plenty of users didn't even give the video a chance. There was even one user who said he was going to learn how to code and make a game for the express purpose of spiting Sarkeesian. That is an absurd level of animosity for someone that the user probably doesn't even know.

I've said it many times before. I just don't get the vitriol being directed at Sarkesian. Yes, she is off base sometimes but her videos are just opinions. She poses absolutely ZERO threat to anything. I get your issues with the video because you articulated them. I just don't understand why more people can't simply argue the merits and flaws of Sarkesians videos instead of either dismissing or demonizing her.

The frustrating part is that there is actually a pretty interesting dialogue that could be had on both sides if people would just tone down the hostility and argue their positions in a meaningful way. I'm not even saying people should be nice, but at least make some kind of point, the "anita sarkesian is dumb" comments add nothing to the conversation.

I feel her videos would hold a lot more weight if the context-trickery and off hand audio splicing didnt happen, and that she focused less on ragging on games and more on improving them, as her twitter feed each time a new game is released, along with her partner johnathan is one of questionable negativity each and every release, often ignoring the reasoning for the things they find issue with, or giving the developers/designers the benefit of the doubt.

Her severe misrepresentation of Hitman: Absolution was quite horrendous. And at E3, she claimed that the Persona 4: DAN pamphlet with Rise Kujikawa on it was sexist and that every badge had the pamphlet attached.

*liked*

Watched the video and I think she do raise some valid points, her only problem is that she goes too far at times. The review will probably be useless to those not interested in these topics but for those that have that interest it's really not that bad.

On a side note I'm apparently following her on Steam. I knew Feminist Frequency sounded familiar.

Those kind of comments will happen regardless of who the content creater is and are not representative of all the criticism geared towards Anita nor this is even an issue unique to her.

In response to your second paragraph, Anita actually does pose a threat, or should I say, used to. She and Zoe Quinn tried to promote censorship of criticism, attempting to redifine criticism as harassment. As a libertarian, that does not fly with me. Thankfully, the cyberviolence against women report from the UN deservingly got called out and got removed. For goodness sakes, one of the citations was a link to someone's harddrive -__-"

As for your last, the frustrating part is that there would be some dialogue if Anita stops constantly censoring her videos and articles. If you're so confident in your product, you should be prepared for the criticisms that lie ahead and have counterarguments ready. I see nothing of the sort from her. A lot of people have challenged her opinions: AlphaOmegaSin, thunderf00t, MrRepzion, TL;DR, Sargon of Akkad, Vee, Liana K, MundaneMatt, Margaret MacLennan, etc., but not once has she actually addressed their counterarguments. Instead, she Tweeted about how these people are "harassing" her. Sure, the "Anita Sarkeesian is dumb" comments don't help, but they are not representative of all the criticism.
