Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why Is Metacritic So Hated?

Basically Metacritic is wrong when the games people support get negative reviews.

Metacritic is correct when the games people support get positive reviews.

I don't hate it myself but it is kinda broken, like the review system in general. Reviews have lost most of their meaning for me.

What metacritic does is dumb down the individual reviews into a meaningless score. It enables ignorant people to base their opinions on things without putting the effort of research in it.

Metacritic is not at fault but it would be better for everyone if it and its variants would not exist.

It's great that Metacritic averages reviews but it's also flawed since it averages reviews. It's not the best score indicator, but it definitely is useful

People hate Metacritic because it sometimes rate games those people will never play on the systems they prefer poorly.

Even worse, Metacritic sometimes rates games said people will never play on systems they don't own well.

that's true.  it's practically the same game but better so scoring less than the original won't change that.  if you enjoyed it before, you will enjoy it again.  As long as the game isn't broken, buying a game that score 60-70 shouldn't be problem if you are sure that you will enjoy it.

Let me add something else, I'm a guy that tries a lot of games. Either I pick them up cheap on eBay, I'm always looking at the Marketplace for deals, and I've rented many through Gamefly in the past. My Xbox profile says I've played just over 600 games (retail and digital). Bear in mind I don't complete them all, not enough time for that, but it only takes a hour or two to see what most games are about.

There are a few games I certainly enjoy that scored in the 60s (Ryse is pretty good!). But in MOST cases, games that score 60s or less are objectively bad, seriously flawed, or boring. When you try so many games you learn Metacritic is actually a pretty good guide at directing people away from crap.

Yeah.  I normally wait for huge price drops on games that score around 60.  So far I havent been wrong and I am glad that I didnt pay full price for them.  The order is one of them.  Meanwhile I took a risk at buying DBZ xenoverse full price that score 70 and I dont regret it one bit.  I spent more than 100 hours already.  Granted, I am a dbz fan so that really help.
