I think you can because i am one of these people. I have owned every nintendo home console since the super nintendo and buy every game that is worth playing on these nintendo systems ( anygame that i would rate 7/10 or more}. My favourite franchises by far are the legend of zelda, metroid, and 3d mario games. I'm in my thirties now but my excitement for these games has not diminished, i'm still like a kid at christmas whenever these games get announced let alone released. I even get hyped over remakes like Majora's mask 3d and the possibility of Twilight princess hd.
So i consider myself a pretty huge Nintendo fan but i also consider myself a gamer. By this i mean that i just like playing great games and you are missing out on some of the best games in the industry if you do not own a Playstation system and to a slightly lesser degree an Xbox system (it has less exclusives). The xbox systems have the likes of gears of war, halo, forza and the biggest 3rd party games will always be on the system so for me it was an obvious purchase.
Moving on to playstation 3 took a bit more time. I got a 360 first so therefore i didn't really didn't think i needed a ps3, plus no one i knew had a ps3 but most people i knew had a 360. whenever there was any disscussion online about which hd console was better i always sided with the 360 over the ps3. And i would come up with the usual opinions that everyone used (better online, better ports etc) even though i had never played the system before, the only true reason i sided with the 360 was because i had a 360 but i didn't have a ps3 so therefore the ps3 is worse. move to 2012 and the ps3 was getting relatively cheap and all the top games were as well because they were getting old. So i decided to buy a ps3 and see if it was any good, three years later and i am still thoroughly enjoying my ps3 and have almost completed all of the 75 plus games i have bought for it. Now i think the ps3 is an essential purchase for any gamer out there, it has great exclusives, a far greater number japanese games so their is more variation within its game library and it also has a superior achievement method because you have a greater incentive to 100% a game (its called a platinum trophy). Overall i think the ps3 is just as good as the xb360 and maybe i even prefer it slightly.
So in short i really enjoy playing on other systems, i may not feel the hype like i do with my favourite nintendo games (which is not necessarily a bad thing because you are shielded from crushing dissapointment if the game is a letdown) but i still couldn't do without a non nintendo console because i would be missing out on so many amazing experiences.
