Actually that pizza doesn't look that great, they should have at least peeled those apples. Does this look any better? (I forgot you can also add nuts) Anyway, in nothern Italy it's quite common :P |
Looks good.
Although in Naples they'd be horrified, elsewhere in Italy Gorgonzola cheese and walnuts is a refined and appreciated topping (also for piadina and focaccia and also as sandwich filling). Can't tell whether the fruit in the photo is apple or pear, but a very classic Italian pairing of fruit with cheeses is pear. Apples can be fine with some cheeses, though, and with Grana and Parmigiano Reggiano three very fine pairings are honey or balsamic vinegar or quince compote.
To such pizzas it's also quite common to add cured ham slices, and it must be added strictly after cooking, the heat of the pizza melts the fat of the ham, but it must not be cooked.
If a skilled chef wants to put more fruits on pizza, they will. And manage to make it taste great.

But not really. Most things we call vegetables are indeed fruit, scientifically speaking, including corn, beans, peppers, tomatoes, etc.

Speaking of which, since a Cucumber is technically fruit, I'm going to go with pickles as a good topping.
Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.
