Forums - Sales Discussion - Over the long term, Sony is in a tough spot

How will things pan out?

MS will get USA, Nintendo will get Japan 41 19.52%

Sony strong with global strength 168 80.00%

Total:209

Would just like to point out that Sony was competetive in Europe during the 7th gen, which was its worst gen til then, while it was both Nintendo's and MS' strongest gens til then (and probably ever).

PS: talking about home consoles of course.

Wii U sold 2.5 million according to vgchartz in like... 3 years?

PS4 sold 1.6 million in... 2 years?

Totally irrelevant, that's like 1 black friday lol.

Home consoles are dead in Japan, so fucking sad.

Rest of the World is growing faster tough, they already are strong in the middle east and they are pushing stronger for Asia and they also going to assemble PS4s in brazil so they can easily take back Latin America. So in the future they plan to resemble the same what happened in europe all over the world. Japan is also moving faster for the PS4, most of these Nintendo games are a lot cheaper anyways so Sony should make the same money in Japan like Nintendo especially with PS+.

So the theory is, if both Microsoft and Nintendo perform much better and Sony does nothing, it won't be good for Sony?

I mean ... yeah.

Wii U is not "competitive" in Japan nor is it the"market leader". Current YTD of PS4 is already past double that of Wii U and it'll blaze past it like Sonic in 2016.
Sorry' I don't see it. Only place they have to worry about is US

Really the only reason the WiiU is ahead in Japan is because of its head start.

The big difference here is that Sony does pretty well in all three major regions. If Sony gets close seconds in two regions and then crushes in the third, they're going to be the best selling world wide.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Phil more or less just said Sony won. So if we're going by what Phil said, should we use his up to date quotes?

"Xbox chief Phil Spencer has admitted that he doesn't know whether Microsoft will be able to overtake Sony this generation, acknowledging that PS4 has a "huge lead" over Xbox One."

Let this thread rest.

I'm just saying an outdated Phil discussion is not the best place to build such conclusions, which as others have shown are faulty.

This is a pretty strange hypothetical situation. "What if MS/Nintendo become more competitive in Europe/row" doesn't really leave much for discussion, especially when there's currently no reason to believe such a thing would happen.

A somewhat extreme example, but this is a bit like asking "What if MS gets their shit together in Japan? Are Sony/Nintendo in trouble?"

Edit: or are you asking what would happen if Nintendo were to dominate in Japan and MS were to dominate in NA? In that case, that's unlikely given playstation has always been quite competitive in those regions, but if it were to happen then it wouldn't mean much for Nintendo given how insignificant Japan has become on the home console front, and while it would certainly help MS, I think Europe/Row have a bigger potential audience so I wouldn't say Sony would be in a worse position than the other 2 even then. Of course as I said earlier, this whole thread is predicated on some pretty unlikely scenarios.

If nintendo focused on Japan and MS on america then they will surely lose to sony's playstation consoles every time. None of them can beat each other sales wise by just focusing on one territory. It would take a world wide effort to dominate any gen in the near or far future.

Yes, Sony's in dire trouble of running into supply shortages at this point.
