Forums - Nintendo Discussion - SMT x FE receives two new and way better trailers, shows the story has a dark side

Well here ya go. Both of these trailers are way better than the ones we were given. Especially the story trailer, it shows the game has a dark side to it and that people need to get past the whole idol vibe. It's obviously going to revolve around the entertainment business, but it also goes to shit. :D

The first one is the story trailer, it starts out fun and flirty and then about mid way through, BAM. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. Also to people saying it wasn't remotely dark... yes, what happens in the trailer isn't like "holy crap what" but it's still dark. Also, if you don't think everything will go to shit, remember in the first trailer, the player is looking at RUINED TOKYO. So both that and the stuff in this trailer show it has a dark side.

The second is short but is still pretty awesome

I knew it! The game is definitely multi-layered, like I've been saying all along. The clues were there for the people that cared enough to read into them.

Thanks for posting these, I'll be adding them to the official thread!

P.S. Can I just say that the OST in this game is amazing? I loved the jpop of the previous trailers, but this showed that it's going to be much more diverse than what I thought. Very superb so far.

I mean, I don't think anyone was under the impression that there would be no conflict. The "dark side" shown here is extremely tame and nothing like what I'd expect from an SMT game. It's just as "dark" as one would expect an anime-RPG who's color scheme is rainbows and who's soundtrack is bubblebum jpop to be.

...But this isn't an SMT game really, so yeah. Looks good.

This game have very strange lighting system. Characters and environments looks very blurry which is contrary to crisp and clear anime cutscenes.

It looks so deliciously anime. Very magical girl genre as well, what with dicovering special powers and having glowing transformations into pretty costumes. Even the way they get grabbed by those dark forces and separated, with her crying out his name, is so, well.....sailor moonish. I like it.

This 'dark side' you talk of is pretty laughable if that trailer is anything to go about.

Pretty disappointing trailer if you ask me.

Uhh...it's like 30 seconds of one trailer. Clearly they're not going to show everything in one clip, and it's pretty obvious now the way they're handling the progression of these videos. It was just a taste - as all trailers are.

Like I said 'if that trailer is anything to go about'.

Im talking about what was just shown in the trailer. And I stand by what I said... theres nothing 'dark' about the footage at all. Nothing shown so far really screams the atmsophere associated with an SMT game, and anyone claiming that it is are just showing off their hype muscles.

When a better 'dark` trailer comes then I will willingly applaud the direction. But im not going to at what I just watched.

Lol, what?

First of all, this is not a SMT game, and I've seen no one claim it is, so that's just a straw man argument. Secondly, no one said it was as dark as a SMT game, which it's not. It's a completely separate thing and should be treated as such. People need to stop acting as if this has to be that dark (few games are, by the way) and being "disappointed" when the end result isn't such. Thirdly, the footage absolutely showed dark material. The music and visual direction radically shifted and we were shown the main characters being strangled and kidnapped by an evil spirit, and afterwards they showed them battling with several demons obviously inspired by those in SMT, all leading up to a showdown between the main character and said evil spirit. No, that's not SMT level, but again: no one said it was. It's simply darker than what was shown before, which is 100% true.

Damn, OP! You hyped me for absolutely nothing!

How is that even remotely dark? You have the nice young girl with a dream ("Watch, Onee-san, I'll become an idol!", please....), and then monsters appear and kidnap her, and her friends get magical powers to fight the monsters. And then, we can go back to the idol/singing/friendship magical show ("I love singing!" in the supposedly dark part of the trailer...). That's not even Naruto's level of dark side, it's barely Shonen/Shojo 101 ^^ (it's exactly like the preview for next week episode of any "Friends kill monsters" generic shonen).

Yes, it's not SMT, I know. It's not Persona 5 either, I know. But I don't understand how anyone can say "dark side", "it all goes to shit", "BAM" for a trailer like that... 10 seconds with 3 monsters and the heroes' powers appearing do not make this trailer dark at all (you didn't think we would be fighting against monsters?).

EDIT : The second trailer does not give anything new. I like the music and Chrom's design, but the main characters and what I understand from the dialogues are just... Generic is the nicest word I can find (cringe worthy would be more appropriate for some parts).

This game's cutscenes are fucking beautiful. Jesus Christ.

The comparison to Sailor Moon seems valid. And, to be honest, there's nothing wrong with Magical Girl (and boy) anime like whatever this is trying to replicate. I loved Sailor Moon as a kid, and this game is still Rated M for some reason, so there's something there for older audiences.

The soundtrack isn't as bad either when you view it from that point of view.

But yeah, Atlus fucked up big time when with the way they teased this game two years ago. That is 99% of the reason it is getting shit, and it's completely their fault. Literally all they had to do was make the teaser more colorful and up beat and either call the crossover Persona x FE or make it more clear that the SMT was meant to represent the entire franchise by using characters from the spin offs instead of the main series. If the teaser was colorful, had a somber pop song, and used characters from Persona, Digital Devil Sage, etc instead of SMT 1, 2, 3, 4, and If, this fan backlash would never have happened.

It's clouding people's impressions of what could end up being a really special game because of the failed expectations.
