I don't really prefer having an indie character in Smash, but I guess I would go with Shantae

That means that everything will be indie on the NX.

I'd chose Shovel Knight, but I'd really rather there not be any indies in Smash at all.

None of them have earned it. Mega Man, Sonic, Pac-Man, and Ryu had to become house hold names for decades to be allowed on such sacred ground without being first party. Shovel Knight has, by comparison, been out for a little over a year, and nobody but die hard gamers will likely ever know who he is. And he's the biggest indie right now.
