Don't play Suikoden 2 before 1, there's more than just a few returning party members. Besides, Suiko 1 is pretty short for a RPG (below 30 hours).

Breath of Fire 4 but why not Symphony of the Night ???

Because Simon's Quest is a much better game and I think he has already beaten that one.

If you can't play Suikoden 1, then I say Suikoden 2. Suikoden is a breath of fresh air for RPGs. You have six party members at a time, a complex story, and (nearly) 108 potential faction members! Some join automatically but part of the fun is going around and convincing others to join. Also, as you play, you build up your castle, where some of the 108 will open up shops, so recruiting helps strengthen your base.

Suikoden II has one of the best villains of all-time and a plot that examines some of the worst and most unfair aspects of war. With Final Fantasy Tactics, it's one of the most mature JRPGs ever made.

I thought this was recomend an rpg, I was going to recomend legend of legaia since it came along the time of lod and had a unike playstyle to, but I havent played the games you listed.

It's not necessary to play S1 before S2.  There are plenty of reappearing characters but the main character is completely different person fighting in a different conflict.  

Would you try Summon Night series or .Hack series ?
