Competition in the gaming industry has always been a fierce thing not just for console makers, but also for all game makers. This generation has seemed to focus more on the competition between Sony and Microsoft, but from what we've heard from both sides recently, they seem to be most focused on making their own platforms better versus focusing on what the competition is doing.
That said, it's hard for a company like Microsoft to look at the PS4 and the Xbox One and ignore the areas they may feel they're doing better, yet see they're still not pushing out as many units as the competition. It's all a matter of perspective and that is something that can help a company continue to move forward, regardless of what a competitor does.
Phil Spencer has carried a message of worrying about what Microsoft and folks on the Xbox One team can control, while not trying to focus on what Sony is doing. In a recent interview, he spoke more about this sentiment and how he doesn't try to compare the success of the Xbox One to that of the PS4.
"To some it might seem like I should judge our success based on how we do against Sony. Honestly, I don’t. They’re having great success with PS4. They built a nice product in the console. They’re seeing the results of that. For us, we’re selling more Xbox Ones than we did 360s. The thing I’m focused on more than anything is that our usage on Live continues to grow. We have more gamers playing games on our platform," Spencer told VB.
The messaging shouldn't be one platform versus another as the gaming industry is far better off with the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U all thriving. The more success each platform finds this generation, the better off we'll be in the long-run because that success will continue to support a variety of new and interesting game experiences.
Microsoft has two of the Xbox One's biggest launches coming up over the next month and a half. Halo 5: Guardians will launch exclusively on the Xbox One on Oct. 27, and then a few weeks later Rise of the Tomb Raider will drop on Nov. 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
The PS5 Exists.
