German Chancellor Angela Merkel was overheard confronting Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over incendiary posts on the social network, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, amid complaints from her government about anti-immigrant posts in the midst of Europe's refugee crisis.

On the sidelines of a United Nations luncheon on Saturday, Merkel was caught on a hot mic pressing Zuckerberg about social media posts about the wave of Syrian refugees entering Germany, the publication reported.

The Facebook CEO was overheard responding that "we need to do some work" on curtailing anti-immigrant posts about the refugee crisis. "Are you working on this?" Merkel asked in English, to which Zuckerberg replied in the affirmative before the transmission was disrupted.

In recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees have washed up on Europe's shores, seeking asylum from the raging civil war in their homeland. As Europe's largest economy, Germany has sheltered the majority of them, leading to widespread objections within the country.

Earlier this month, Facebook vowed to clean up what it deemed was racist content on the German version of its website. At the time, the social network said it would partner with a non profit group to oversee hate postings.

Yet any action from Facebook is likely to stoke concerns about free speech. In the past, the social network has come under suspicion for suppressing or deleting posts and groups that advocate unpopular beliefs.

Bloomberg's full report can be found on its website.

Mark Zuckerberg Caught on Hot Mic Saying Facebook Will Censor Anti-Migrant Posts

Facebook CEO tells German chancellor "we need to do some work"

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was caught discussing the censorship of anti-migrant posts at the
According to CNBC, the pair were picked up by a hot mic after Merkel confronted Zuckerberg on social media posts critical of “the wave of Syrian refugees entering Germany.”
After being asked about Facebook’s efforts to curtail speech, Zuckerberg stated, “We need to do some work,” confirming he’d already started looking at ways to hinder comments in opposition to Merkel’s immigration stance.
“Are you working on this?” Merkel asked. “Yeah,” Zuckerberg responded before their microphone was cut.
In response to the shocking revelation, media outlets such as Bloomberg immediately leapt to the defense of the tech giant, insinuating that any critique of the German government’s response to the migrant crisis would be “racist” and “xenophobic.”
Only just last week, an article by Infowars’ Kit Daniels examining the pope’s controversial comments on mass immigration was pulled and barred from Facebook without explanation.
Since the migrant crisis began, news outlets across the globe have both covered up crucial facts, specifically NATO’s responsibility in destabilizing Syria, and gone out of their way to outright ignore any stories that highlight the criminal acts of migrants.
Zuckerberg’s penchant for censoring speech deemed politically incorrect is unsurprising given his meeting late last year with Lu Wei, the czar of China’s authoritarian Internet censorship system.

Germans Could Have Their Children Snatched For Anti-Migrant Facebook Posts

Opposing influx of "refugees" puts people at risk of being fired

Germans who make racist anti-migrant posts could have their children snatched by the state and be fired from their jobs, according to the German Lawyers’ Association.
In an article entitled Racism and parenting: Threatening loss of custody?, lawyer Eva Becker, Chair of the Working Group on Family Law in the German Bar Association, outlines the conditions under which “xenophobic” Facebook posts could lead to parents being targeted.
Although Becker asserts that merely opposing the settlement of migrants in Germany would not lead to parental rights being terminated, such views could easily lead to someone being fired from their job.

Expressing a desire for violence against the migrants would constitute evidence enough for a family court to remove children from the home, according to Becker.
While this appears to be a high bar, idle threats of violence are made by countless people on the Internet every day, with the vast majority going completely unpunished.
Given the apparent cover-up of rapes being committed by “migrants” in Germany, the notion of an irate father making violent comments in a ‘heat of the moment’ Facebook rant is entirely plausible. Although such comments are obviously abhorrent, should they really lead to children being taken away from their parents by the state?
Becker suggests that racist and xenophobic statements made in the presence of a child that constitute a “negative influence” would also be investigated by the authorities.
Becker advises ex-partners to collect screenshots of Facebook comments and other Internet activity if they are considering bringing a case before the family court.
As we highlighted yesterday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was caught on a hot mic discussing plans with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to censor anti-migrant Facebook posts in Germany.
“Are you working on this?” Merkel asked. “Yeah,” Zuckerberg responded before their microphone was cut.
Those found guilty of “refugee baiting” remarks will be hit with fines up to €5000 euros or 120 days in jail. The program will be overseen by Network Against Nazis (Netz gegen Nazis), a group led by left-wing activist Anetta Kahane.
As we previously reported, Kahane worked as a Stasi informant under the codename “Victoria” from 1974-1982. The Stasi’s role was to spy on the population of East Germany and to use its vast network of informants to hunt down political dissidents.
Edited because yeah, I need to ditch the ads

It is up to Facebook, but I personally wouldn't use Facebook anymore if they started censoring people for political views.

What the German government is doing otherwise, is disgusting to be honest.

I disagree with censorship period, although the company has the right to determine whats on its website, it should completely ignore Merkel.

If people want to post things on facebook, so all the world can here their beliefs, let them do so. The rest of us who know that the internet isn't removed from reality will be fine.

I mean, if you expressed an intent/desire for violence publicly, then I'm sure it could have some pretty harsh implications, so it's not surprising that the same can happen when expressing those same things online.

Uh, it's not like that at all. Saying I want to kick out all of the refugees is quite different than making a very specific, credible death threat to a single person or place. That's the kinda thing that gets you investigated.

hilarious stance from some of the VGC users here.

Why should Facebook be different in that regard from VGC? Here you can't say everything you want either. This is a moderated place and it needs to be since it's public.
Also you're forgetting that this is a crime in Germany and other countries and has been for decades. Not much different from say posting child porn.

So someone who has anti-open borders views on immigration and doesn't think very highly of the "refugees" that are flooding into Europe is not much different from Jared Fogle?
