Forums - Nintendo Discussion - If the NX released both the handheld and home consoles at the same time...

NX or NXDS?

NX (Home) 85 46.45%

NXDS (Handheld) 39 21.31%

Both at the same time 41 22.40%

Neither ever 18 9.84%

Total:183

I've bought every Nintendo hardware outside of the Virtual Boy, and even the Virtual Boy I regret not picking one up when it was on clearance at Blockbuster Video.

So that answers that question. That said buying both means probably a $500 commitment or so, I'm starting to wonder if the idea really makes sense. I mean I'll do it because I'm a Nintendo fanatic, but I don't think very many general consumers would.

Most people will buy the handheld, it's just been overwhelmingly the more popular hardware version for Nintendo even though the console tends to get the "bigger games", so now that the portable is going to have all the games, I don't know how many people will bother with the console, or want to pay $200-$300 just to play the same games on the TV. I'm thinking they may be more apt to spend that $200-$300 on a Playstation 4 since it offers a different library if they want a console and just buy the Nintendo portable if they're interested in Nintendo games.

I'm also looking at a lot of Nintendo's own quotes about NX and there seem to be several times where they speak about it as a singular platform that is unique from existing Nintendo hardware. So that makes me wonder if they did R&D different hardware variants, but perhaps came back and settled on one. Iwata did NOT rule out a singular platform, he said in that old quote that he wasn't sure (could be 1, could more than 2, etc.). Maybe they have settled on a device (at least to start) that is part console but still portable. If that's $250-$270 even, it's a far better value than two seperate devices that come out to like $400-$500.

I'd go for handheld since it should be cheaper and portability though I wouldn't be getting it day one

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Depends on the prices and bundles.
If all 3 bundles I suggested in my thread about bundles. I would go handheld first, and then later on I will get the console.
Unless the console+handheld bundle includes a game or two that are absolutely big time games on the system at no extra cost like saaayyy, the next 3D Mario game plus Zelda Wii U.
But other than that,
I think I'll go with the handheld to start out.

I'd probably get both eventually, but if it genuinely played all the same games, no platform exclusives and supported/had it's own gamepad, I'd go for the home console first.

This is just my hypothesis, but I think that's where Nintendo's new membership program that'll be replacing Club Nintendo will come in.
Maybe if you're subscribed to their new program, they can give sweet deals regarding the systems like:
If you buy the handheld and register it in the service, you could get a printable receipt from the website that lets you get 50% off on the console plus a free game of your choosing. Although they could be taking a hit in the profit department off the console, especially if the new service is free.

Depends on screen size of handheld - generally, I don't like handhelds, never have. But that mostly came down to screen size - 7 inch tablets are about the first mobile devices I feel fairly comfortable playing on, so if NX handheld is that size, then handheld (only that, no need for both).

Though, if you can hook it up to TV, and handheld is cheaper, then again, the choice is handheld - anything that will play Zelda really.

Of course, there's the question of local co-op games and is that achievable on handheld hooked up to TV, so maybe home console will really be only choice for me.

...In other words, you'll probably get both. If not, just the handheld. Got it.

Getting 50% off hardware like that is completely unrealistic.

I wouldn't expect anything over 5 inches wide for the top handheld screen. Also don't expect it to plug into the TV. That's what the NX is for.

If they release a nice bundle at around 400-450€ with two games (at least one big game) then count me in for both.

Otherwise I would only buy the home console, as I love playing on a big screen.
