If anything he was promoting the pokemon IP and instead should be paid four grand by the pokemon company. Why did they bother to do this when most likely this will only be negative PR for pokemon...

"Kid gets drunk at official Pokémon party"

"Drug dealer arrested at official Pokémon party"

You're not allowed to make money from licensed trademarks. It's that simple. You have to be an idiot to think you're allowed to ask admission fees for a franchise you don't own the rights of.

This case is merely to set an example.

"Pokemon company sues loyal fan who organized unofficial pokemon events" The four thousand is not worth the negative PR. It's that simple.

The two dollars he charged per person were for the giveaways and DJ. He's not making money off of any "admission fees". I'm sure he's making money from the customers buying other non-pokemon related things.

How many hobby shops organize those card games and charge some kind of money for it or the prizes? Countless. This is a case of a company shitting on a fan.

They should of let it slide because they gain nothing by stopping it versus letting it keep going and no bad PR.

The guy was doing it for 4 years, I think it's justified.

The company did more damage to itself with this bulshit lawsuit than the guys party could ever do...

The guy obviously did wrong because in this story, there were money involved by using an IP that wasn't his.

That being said, the punishment is way, way too harsh. $4000 dollars? It's not like this guy was single-handely going to drive the Pokemon Company out of business...jeez.

That would be true if he actually made money. As far as the article goes the party was canceled, hence no one made any money.

Except of course for the people who claimed they were damaged.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Why does Nintendo charge for everything that promotes their franchises? Youube videos and now a Pokemon party, anyone saying that its justified is taking favours of the company and nothing else. Its illegitimate. Nintendo should stop doing it. Its petty and really bad.

While of course the Pokemon Company had every right to do this, I'm not sure the negative PR is worth it. No matter what he did, it always looks bad when a multimillion dollar company is throwing it's weight around against a single probably very passionate fan.

I'm not sure about the legalities, but would it have been fine if instead of an actual admission fee he would have had a donation jar with a suggested donation of 2$?
Or would he still have been profiting off of someone elses IP because people likely bought beverages at his cafe?
I feel like it might be more of a legal gary aeria if theres no admission fee, but I might be wrong.

Lol, Pokémon is a way too big franchise to be even remotely damaged by this. He says he's not making any money, you're hearing the story only from his point of view. Of course he's going to play victim.

If Pokémon can get away with releasing the same game over and over again for 20 years than this is no problem either.

Oh come on!

Do people really believe this news will generate negative PR that will be of any concern to the Pokemon brand? How amusing, 90% of Pokemon fans or more won't even be aware of this case and wouldn't care either.

JK Rowling did something similar to a fan of Harry Potter and that had no impact on the franchise.

Wouldn't a C&D in this case be a bit more appropriate? Nintendo & The Pokemon Company go way over the top when it comes to this stuff, I feel like it hurts their brand more than it helps.
