Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Acquires Havoc

Oh, dear:

Today, we are proud to announce that Microsoft has acquired Havok, the leading provider of 3D physics, from Intel.

As we welcome Havok to the Microsoft family, we will continue to work with developers to create great gaming experiences, and continue to license Havok’s development tools to partners. We believe that Havok is a fantastic addition to Microsoft’s existing tools and platform components for developers, including DirectX 12, Visual Studio and Microsoft Azure.

Havok is an amazing technology supplier in the games industry and the leading real-time physics creator. We saw an opportunity to acquire Havok to deliver great experiences for our fans. Throughout the company’s history, they’ve partnered with Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and many others to create more than 600 games including Halo, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Destiny, Dark Souls and The Elder Scrolls.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Havok continues our tradition of empowering developers by providing them with the tools to unleash their creativity to the world. We will continue to innovate for the benefit of development partners. Part of this innovation will include building the most complete cloud service, which we’ve just started to show through games like “Crackdown 3.”

Havok shares Microsoft’s vision for empowering people to create worlds and experiences that have never been seen before, and we look forward to sharing more of this vision in the near future.

The PS5 Exists.

Awesome :)

They are using Havoc in Halo if I'm not mistaken and several of their games already too.
At some point this was expected from Microsoft to acquire some "engine" studios.

It was only a matter of time since Intel found out that Larrabee was a dud ...

It's nice that we're going to see a standardized largely GPU accelerated physics engine ...

Cool.

well that explains whey lbp is so floaty.

So they're going with engine studios that bring in monetization of gaming, rather than new games?
Appears to be a withdrawal.
Like, "it's worth more to us to make money on your games, than our games"
Just a thought.

Before people start losing their tits over this; remember that businesses don't live inside a bubble that includes rage over console wars. This acquisition while big, likely changes nothing for current developers including Sony and Nintendo. Businesses compete with one another, but they don't deny themselves business either.

For example; Sony sells Apple camera sensors despite competing with them with their xperia product line.

I wouldn't be surprised if, in a couple of years, we read that Havok requires DirectX to work.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Yep, I couldn't help thinking that myself. I look at their lacklustre bundles for Christmas, their acquisition of this and Minecraft and think 'this could be it you know.' Make money, not games.

Oh, dear. Keep hoping!

OT: Don't see how it changes much. Microsoft has DirectX which game developers seem fine relying on, don't see why Havoc would be much different.
