Forums - PC Discussion - Oculus Rift Will Cost “More than $350”

- Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey dropped on us the minimum price for their VR device during an interview at Connect where he was asked if Oculus Rift price would come in around that $350 ballpark target that had been discussed by the company long ago, he said:

"You know, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you. We’re roughly in that ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that. And the reason for that is that we’ve added a lot of technology to this thing beyond what existed in the DK1 and DK2 days."

- high price seems to be the result of prioritizing "quality of experience" over affordability according to Luckey

- Luckey says:

"It would really suck if you put something out there and people were like ‘ah man… the Rift is good, but it’s not quite there’, you know? ‘If only it was a little better, if the lenses were a little better, if the resolution was a little better, if the screens had been a little bit better, then it would be great because you’d  you’d say ‘god, we could have just charged a little more and put a little bit more money into custom hardware and actually achieve that’.

Are you interested in Oculus Rift?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

If all VR tech costs as much, I can't see it becoming very popular. Buying a +350€ console, a +50€ game and a +300€ headset it's a ton of money to play.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

so $400 than? a bit too expensive for my taste.

i'm hoping psvr comes in at $200 for just the headset. i already have a camera and move controllers so $200 for me and $300 for the full package sounds like it is in the right ballpark to me.

That's not surprising. I expect the Rift to fall in between the PSVR and the Vive in price when it launches. At $400 the Rift should be able to find a home with die hards that are knowingly willing to be the ones to take the dive and be the early adopters of VR. If of course, the experience is as good as they say it's going to be.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

As someone who tried a bit of Oculus Rift... $350 doesn't seem worth it at all.

I can't see this picking up...

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I think for me it's going to be a situation were I'll have to try it somewhere (like a rich friend's house) before I decide whether or not it's worth it.

Now, all I need to do is find some rich friends... how much do you guys make?

Signature goes here!

No way is this gonna pick up. 350? That's more money than everything I've ever bought in my entire life!

Too much for me and I'd guess majority of people. I still want to try it out, but $200-250 was my price range if I enjoyed it. $350-400 is premium cannot justify.

That cant be good for oculus rift sales nr's.

hit the nail right on the head.

350-400$ is just too much.

I bet PS VR pushes PS4 sales, because people dont want to spend that much building a PC & buying a O. rift, just to experiance VR.

They ll be very tempted to try the PS4 version instead, simply because of price.

Any and every dime Sony can afford to make the PS VR cheaper than their competitor is money well spent/invested.

The more consumers they can get to go with the PS solution the better for them long term.

Wouldnt surprise me if PS VR comes out 249-299$ range, even if they have to sell at a tiny loss.

thats to rich for my blood I'm afraid.
