Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The Sorry State of Microsoft's First Party

Tagged games:

Guiz we need to seriously talk about how atrocious MS's First party has been. I've been meaning to make a thread about this after my Lionhead comments. After I got banned I kinda lost focus but the recent news about TP going free the nipples has once again reminded me that MS's first party is... a joke. It's pretty simple. Of Course Twisted Pixel is just a lil Indie-like studio so it's not a major loss but at this point I think even an indie studio is a pretty decent hit to MS's first party. Before this gen started there was a bunch of mystery studios that I was optimistic for, I figured one or two of them would be a new AAA game studio. Sadly NONE of them were. I will not turn a blind eye towards MS's First party, and the fact that their biggest studios are "one trick ponys" (I don't like that term but... so let me rephrase this.... the fact that their biggest Studios are only focused on ONE IP really sucks. For the record, I don't think Sony's and Nintendo's first party is perfect by any means. I'd say they're slightly better than MS's. If people want I can breakdown their first party as well.

Disclaimer: This contains opinions, yeah OPINIONS. Have your own? Post them

343 Industries - Halo slave studio, though they seem to like that. They've done a decent job so far with Halo (aside from MCC MM). I'd say their MS's best studio but this can be debated. If MS gave them freedom from Halo or even let them branch out into other genres like making a Halo RPG they might just be MS's ND

Decisive Games - Working on a Strategy game... Might be AAA? New IP? This might be a promising studio

Good Science - Studio is pretty much died, probably working on Hololens...

Speaking of HoloLens, let's just get these studios out of the way. The 5 studios we got excited for that turned out to be HoloLens studios...

(Fun)ction studios

Leap Experience Pioneers

Platform Next

SOTA (State of the art studios)

FIT

Yupp ALL HoloLens Studios

Kids and Lifestyle Entertainment - Makers of Xbox Fitness, doesn't seem to be doing much...

Launchworks - Still around, looks like they only assist other studios now...

MS Casual games team - Makers of Bingo, Solitare, Minesweeper.... Yeah nothing to see here

Microsoft Garage - Barely can be called a studio... made Voice commander for Xbone

Team Dakota - Made Project Spark.... yipeee

Turn10 studios - Forza slave....

Well let's see if the Europe studios are doing any better

Lift London - Mobile and F2P games in development... yayy

Lionhead Studio - Supposed to have a new AAA game in the works... yet I'm still waiting. Fable Slaves, and in my honest opinion an average studio at best.

Rare LTD - Working on that Pirate game, it's not what I wanted but it's something. I think Rare still has talent, we'll see where they go in a few years.

Press Play - A nice smaller Indie studio, whose to say they wont up and leave MS like TP did considering they have the same deal in place.

Mojang - Minecraft moneyhat... Nothing really exciting here. Considering their games are on all platforms it doesn't do much for Xbox. A solid purchase for MS though

Last but not least, the land of ReimTime (aka Canada)

Coalition - Not a fan of gears so... mehh another Studio that is a slave to one IP, plus I much prefered their Black Tusk name.

BigPark - Totally forgot this studio even existed, another dead studio. sweet

Okay... Yeah

I'll give them a 5/10 for 343i, Rare, Decisive, Turn10, Coalition, and Lionhead (eventhough I'm not big on Forza, Gears, or Fable)

This is just sad, please rate and share your thoughts on the sorry state of MS's first party

I apologize for any errors and typos, I'll try to fix them later.

Shoutout to Rare & Sea of Thieves though, MS first party has been underwhelming out of the three.

Yeah it's so sad that Microsoft have many good games they own the IP that in development and release soon.
Why i should care they own the studio or not as long as they own the IP which is fixed their most weak part of MS at 360era.

The only atrocious part is some of people in here is asking MS to do everything, if not, then it's bad.

Is Scalebound and Quantum Break MS IP? Been reading about Scalebound and it seems like a Platinum IP

Yeah, it's kind of funny to look back at all that speculation about all those new AAA studios Microsoft was building for the Xbox One and how they were supposedly going to rival Sony's World Wide Studios in terms of content.

Don't get me wrong, Rome wasn't built in a day and they've certainly improved over the 360, but so many of those mystery studios did not really translate to a markedly superior Xbox first-party selection. So far, Press Play has been the biggest surprise star.

The biggest disappointment, I think, was Black Tusk being turned into a Gears studio. Now, I am biased, as I don't like Gears, but that whole deal literally translated to the loss of an AAA game for Microsoft. If Epic had kept making Gears, who knows what Black Tusk would have produced. Of course, I don't blame them for acquiring Gears and milking it for more but it's still kind of disappointing to see a new IP vanish. Though, I will also say that I really liked the Gears video that was shown at E3.

It might seem strange that I'm singling Black Tusk out and not 343i but I believe that's a different situation, as 343 was MADE to be a Halo development group and people were hired knowing that.

Do we have a MS owned IP thread? I'd like to know what's on the shelf or put to pasture

I'm just talking about their studios. I think they own the IPs though, not 100% sure.

They 100% own both IP.

Honestly I had low expectations yet they still disappoint. Does it matter if the game is made by MS or not? Nope, doesn't mean I still can't be critical of their piss poor First Party Studios.

I was off topic Iceland and just wanted to know. Sorry
Their 1st party has been shit. I don't mind at all that 343 and Coalition stick with one series.
Do we honestly know if that demo which was not really showing much even a game from Black Tusk? AAA at that?
