Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What was the point of the "New" 3DS?

it has 4 cores instead of 2, running the same speed as the old model.
it has 10mb Video ram, instead of 6mb (old model).

Thats about it... Unless the games are developed for the new model specifically, there wont be any difference playing on the new or old model.

Not sure how many new games are made for the XL but... yeah probably not worth the money spent on it.

Have I missed something about this handheld? Has there been any new exclusives for it, besides XC? I wanted to get one, but now I think they are more concerned with whatever the future platform is. They haven't even showed off any new bundles, or special editions.

You think it's still worth upgrading if you already have an XL?

I'm actually pretty disppointed with it. I knew there wasn't going to be a slew of exclusives, but I also expected more than like two...

Thoughts?

it's the new model of the 3DS, like DSi was for DS. So new exclusives weren't to expect.

Is it worth upgrading - hmm, depends. It is a bit faster in menu and stuff and some newer games (like MH4U) have better textures or similar improvements. Also 3D-effect is a lot more stable for movements (I tried). The second analog stick (or nub) is great for some games like MH4U, Ironfall or Zelda MM. Ah yes, and the small variant has changeable faceplates.

So, there are a lot of minor improvements, but nothing serious. You have to decide for yourself if it is enough to justify the purchase.

The point was to make the perfect 3DS before the next gen comes out.

The 3D effects is MUCH BETTER.  Wont make you dizzy and kill you so you can actually use it.  Dont need to keep your hands still! if you move the 3d still looks great!!!

Faster, thinner and better functions. *nub C stick*

its the SUPREME ULTRA 3DS.  And a nice farewell to a great system with tons of awesomeness games!

That's always been the case in portable gaming.  durning the Gameboy days, consoles like the Lynx, TurboXpress, etc were coming out sometimes with the ability to play full console games--not ports-- the ACTUAL games.  The cheap ass GB was killing em all. I think Nintendo just realized what mobile gaming discovered: people will settle for less when it comes to portable gaming.

Well I don't settle. If you give me less, you have to charge me less or forget about my money.

exactly why i skipped on the vita when ti first released.  I was shocked sony charged so much with NO memory card!  It was insulting.  Got a 3ds xl and never looked back!  Thank you sony for making my decision for me!

I'm actually interested in the more stable 3D effect due to head tracking cameras. I tried to bare with the original 3DS for awhile but barely any movement kills the effect and you see double images. A little more power and a nub stick seals the deal for me. I'll look to upgrade this holiday season. Don't even care if the NX handheld releases next year. I will still be happy with my purchase.

I'm happy with the new 3DS. There was a marked improvement on the performance and load times of the games. There was also a good Gamestop deal at the time it came out where you could trade in your old 3DS XL and buy the new one for $80.

run away!

It makes sense for me. With handhelds, people are very likely to upgrade often (just look at phones), so they were able to give a shot into the arm of the struggling dedicated handheld market.

It is more expensive to get a library of the more desirable titles for 3DS than it is for Vita. While the retail price of a 2DS is a good note lower than the Vita, for the Vita retail price you get software included.

If you go to the actual proper 3DS systems, in Europe at least, they tend to cost more than Vitas (even the original model was selling for around the same as a Vita bundle with memory card and game mega pack until the N3DS hit). And that is before factoring in how much cheaper games are to buy on the Vita (most of the main Vita titles such as Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Persona 4, Gravity Rush, WipeOut and the likes will set you back around £15 each, the big 3DS titles are generally always £30).

Overall I'd say the Vita is the cheaper of the 2 handheld systems to acquire a decent software library for, even completely disregarding factors such as PS+. Of course, if it's Mario and Luigi you're after, this is a completely m00t point though. I'm also not getting involved in the build quality side as how a system "feels" is pretty subjective too just like people have preferences for different game pads.

Good for you because I think it's very subjective also, and it wasn't defined at all. Did he mean aesthetics or actual resistance to breakage? Because far as I know Nintendo consoles and accessories are known to not break easily, since they are often designed for kids.

For the rest I agree, but when the 3DS got a price cut at launch, and most of the time through its lifetime despite a few cases in Europe possibly, it was cheaper and if you waited a bit games got cheaper, but I'll agree that in terms of games the Vita is less expensive. Nintendo games are indeed overpriced.

And that is pretty much what I was talking about the whole time Being a 3DS gamer is more expensive than being a Vita gamer (at least in Europe) and I just can't accept and support such a policy, when I can clearly see they invest less to charge me more. The console itself is just the start of the investment. I'm not saying it's a bad console, just that Nintendo is ripping people off, cause the system is overpriced for what it offers and Sony gives me more bang for buck. I like the 3DS and want to buy one, but with the current pricing policy I'd rather stick to Vita and put the 3DS money into getting a PS4 or NX

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
