He's right.
I get his point. It makes sense.
That said, there should also be nothing preventing you from being fired for not doing your job.

He never said the government doesn't have the "human rights" to fire her.
Just putting that out there.

I'm not against freedom of religion but if it stops a government worker to do his job respecting the legal and human rights of the people he should be serving, he's not fit for the job and should resign or be fired.
Everybody should expect their government to respect everyone's legal rights, and there should be no room for discrimination based on religion, race, sex, etc.
Freedom of religion and such is fine, but those things are personal freedoms that should not leak into public rights and laws. "Separation of church and state" and all that.
Simple solution is to take the government out of marriage completely. Take away all the licenses, tax breaks and other nonesense. Marriage should be a legal contract between two individuals followed by whatever ceremony they choose. Problem solved.

First off, gay marriage JUST got legalized nationwide. Her preference on sexuality did not have to be taken into account before, considering she was hired before this movement caught fire. It was simply a man marrying a woman. So at the intitial point of her hiring, she was not unqualified. She became unqualified when a new law had passed that clashed with her morals. This is a text book case of discrimination but it's simply not as cut and dry - there's more going on here on a moral level that's hard to measure.
Anyway I knew this was an uphill battle coming in so I concede lol. It's pleasing to hold a conversation with such collected and intelligent folks here. |
Workplaces change all of the time. You have to adapt.
Suppose I was a teacher before Brown vs Board of Ed who worked in a segregated white school. Brown vs Board of Ed passed, and they add a black child to my class. I refuse to teach them. Should I keep my job?
Suppose I'm a jew who is working as a chef at a restaurant. The restaurant adds pork to its menu, and I refuse to cook in a non-kosher kitchen. Should I keep my job?
