Forums - Sales Discussion - Shovel Knight - 50% of total units sales come from Nintendo Platforms

It released there first, plus it's a type of game that really resonates with PC and Nintendo crowd. Though I believe the PS4 version will pass the Wii U eventually. If only because install base.

That 14% is PS4, PS3 and PS Vita.

Wii U version will surely get a boost by the amiibo as well. SK is also in Runbow, a Wii u exclusive indie game (for now). That's further exposure for the game.

oops, thanks xD

I guess it's still possible if there's a sale on PSN or when the price is cut.

Just for the record, you don't think that being out almost a year longer on the Wii U and 3DS has anything to do with selling more units than on Xbox and Playstation systems?  I just want to make sure I understand you correctly.

Most games get their sales in their first few months, especially famous ones (and Shovel Knight was already famous by the time it released on the PS4).

14% for PS4, PS3 AND Vita is not very good, sorry.

And I also predict Tomb Raider on the PS4 to outsell the XBONE version. Which releases a year later.

Oh, no, I just wanted confirmation.  I've seen a lot of people comment on multi-plats launching later on Nintendo and then saying that's a reason it sold less.  Interesting to know you don't feel that way.

It has an impact, but games like Assasins Creed or CoD are never going to sell anywhere near the amount they do on the other two consoles, no matter when they release.

It's not that third party games don't sell on Nintendo consoles, it's that your typical dudebro games don't sell well on Nintendo consoles. And sadly the Wii U's userbase is too small to make third party games for that suit the demographic. You're much better off making games that suit the demographic of the other two consoles (which are much more alike).

Just for the record for the nitpicky: 10 month earlier on Nintendo platforms only apply in North America, europe got the game a couple month later. It's still earlier, but not by that much there.

Capy clarified on Gaf that the Shovel Knight numbers are actually revenue, not unit sales.

Also, the whole purpose of his analysis was to point out that porting to as many consoles as possible is beneficial to indie developers. So trying to turn this into a console war is completely missing the point.

Yes it makes sense for several reasons that the game sold best (cumulatively) on Nintendo platforms. The PlayStation numbers are fine. What surprises me are the XBO numbers. It sold more than that on Wii U in its first month, and the XBO reportedly got the best exclusive content.

I'm sure Yacht Club is satisfied with the sales they got from such an easy port, but they might be a shade disappointed that relatively few players got to experience that Battletoads boss.

expected,so it doesnt surprise me

it couldve come elsewhere first and it will wouldve been the same outcome

So, you really think that the sales distribution would be exactly the same if the Nintendo platforms were released after every other platform?

Yes, but it says 20 percent from Wii U. PS4 has double the sales and Wii U still is far ahead. So we cannot really blame it on Wii U getting anything first. Let's not forget about the steam juggernaut!

Honestly its because the Xbox One and PS4 have so many other great games, something like Shovel Knight isnt able to compete on those platforms.

Good stuff. The Wii U number is very impressive given the systems low sales.

This is kinda spot on.

Low competition, huge marketing help, and 10 month early arrival locked this thing down for having more sales on the wii u than the ps4/xbox one.

I would have hoped the wii u to have more sales actually
