- Nintendo has sold over 50 million 3DSes without Minecraft

- in spite of the huge impact of mobile on the traditional videogame industry Sony is responsible for the performance of the Vita

- Here is a partial list of reasons the Vita has failed:

  • Sony decided to gouge customers by forcing them to use proprietary memory cards, then jacking up the prices to obscene levels. (A 32GB Vita memory card retails for $100; standard 32GB SDHC memory cards cost $18.)
  • Sony marketed the Vita as a portable system with “console-quality gaming,” then went on to pack it with shoddy spinoffs like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Call of Duty: Declassified, and Resistance: Burning Skies.
  • Despite all this, a subset of hardcore gamers quickly realized that the Vita was a fantastic machine for indies and niche Japanese games. So what did Sony do? They decided to pivot it as a portable accessory to the PS4—as if anyone would dish out an extra $250 to play Destiny on the toilet.
  • Vita owners also realized that the machine is fantastic for playing old PS1 and PSP games. Sony saw how much money they could make there, and they immediately filled out the PlayStation Store, pleasing fans with truckloads of classic new games every week. Just kidding. They ignored it. Even today you need to use a silly shortcut just to get some old games working on your Vita.
  • Remember the PS2? One of the most successful video game consoles in history? Chock full of great games that could be ported to the Vita in various ways? Someone should remind Sony.
  • Remember BioShock Vita? lmao
  • Sony has pretty much spent the past two years pretending the Vita doesn’t exist, ignoring it at every major trade show and convention. It’s embarrassing.
  • Sony has publicly admitted that they are no longer making Vita games.

How much do you think it is Sony's responsibility for Vita underperforming?

Several of those points deal with third party software which Sony doesn't own. What occurred is the overall console market has shrunk down drastically, especially the handheld sector, and there's no room for Vita in the market. It is  the mobile industry which has eaten up the console industry.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

not really. what might be critizisable is... sony should've known how futile it is to throw a high price handheld on the market though there never was a big market for those - nintendo learned that lesson too - and never will be and of course mobile devices like smartphones and tablets which flooded the market.

By the time that became apparent, it was definitely far too late for Sony to do anything about it.

People forget that the PSP was also $249 and went on to do 80 million. And that Sony priced the Vita exactly as Nintendo had the 3DS. Yes of course the added cost ofthe memory card was an issue but the original price of $249 did indeed seem viable at one stage.

Its just that it was too late when the Vita launched because it was around the time tablets/ phones were seeing quick advances in tech and price points.

IIRC by the time Vita was launched, Ninty had already been forced to drastically cut 3DS price, so Sony had been clearly warned by the harsh reality experienced by the market leader.

At least in the Eurozone the PSP was less expensive (249€ -> 299€). When the PS Vita released Nintendo already did the price drop for the 3DS - down to 170€. Twice the price of the direct competitor - considering the costly memory cards - and changing market condition, then to say the price never was an issue... well. It wasn't until the price cut for Nintendos 3DS the sales numbers went considerably up.

SPOT ON!

But idk why the media and gamers are spreading so much hate on Nintendo because of the Wii U, while less about Sony from the PSVITA. "At least Nintendo is still supporting and not giving up on the Wii U"

Yep thats the problem! Nintendo has full or mostly control their first party games. While Sony does not with their third party. Sony needs to expand their first party library.

Im not saying that price was not an issue. Of course it was because the whole climate has changed. But considering the previous gen, Sony wouldnt have thought the price point they were going for frist would have been an issue, even afte the 3DS price cut.

The DS launched at 149 euros and 149 dollars. the PSP at 249. And yet the PSP didnt straight out die. It did really well.

What I am saying though is that you need to examine the climate of the time in relation to the price. And the vita launched at a an unfortunate time and Sony were unable to make the adjustments needed, either because they didnt realise soon enough or because they could not financially afford to do so.

The latter seems pretty likely considering the Vita was coming off the PS3 which was ot exactly the best thing for Sony profits wise, whereas Nintendo was coming off both the DS and Wii.

Sorry if i mixed up and/or wasn't precise enough.

Nevertheless. You stated "examine the climate of the time". Yes, the PSP started with a relatively high price... for the hardware. Many people suggest that the good sales had something to do with the early successful hacking of the device.
