Forums - Gaming Discussion - Edge: The 100 Greatest Video Games

I'll admit this might be the worst "Top 100 Games Ever" list I've ever seen.

Around the Network

Opinions gonna opinions.

The list is fine but people will complain.

"In compiling the list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats – console, PC, portable, coin-op, touchscreen – were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance."

Old games that don't hold up to today games (dated gameplay for example) won't enter in the list.

The list is pretty decent.

Seems heavily biased towards the last 2 generations. Are games really that much better now?

That's fine if you are comparing the first console FPS with the latest ones due to controls and refinement or some badly aged JRPGs. Yet, they gave Golden Eye a retrospective 10 but it's not even on the list.

Edge are contridicting themselves in this list. They have Elite Dangerous in there, which they gave 8/10. Yet they don't have Elite which they gave a retrospective 10 to (they having not existed when Elite first came out). They gave only 1 driving game 10/10, the first Gran Turismo yet the highest ranking driving game on the list is Driveclub which they gave 7/10.

I can understand if things haven't aged well but that wouldn't change the influence certain games have on the existance of others after it.  Much of their list is fine but people are confused by stuff like this. Could you honestly say that Driceclub is the best driving game?

Of course not, sure controls are more refined, games are smoother due to controls but I've yet to find a JPRG matching up to FF6, 7, 8 and 9 and yet to play a platformer as good as older Marios and Crash.

What I think may have been a factor here is the staff at Edge, I think they are younger than we imagine and many of them might not have even considered games older than a certain time as potentials.

Hmm, pie.

In case some of you didn't read the reasoning behind picking the games they did:

'In compiling the list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats – console, PC, portable, coin-op, touchscreen – were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance.'

This should have been included in the OP.

I'll never agree with any Top 100 video game list, but I found this one to be an interesting read, and was delighted and surprised that some personal favourites of mine got a mention.

I like a lot of these games but many of them don't deserve to be in the top 100 of "all time".
Of all time has to include impact on the industry imo. Games like pong, pacman ect need to be accounted for.

Titanfall better than Xenoblade Chronicles?! What a histerical laugh!

Terrible list. That was just an example. I have issue with many on the top.

Wow one of the most horrible top 100 lists I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!

Driveclub???
Destiny???
Titanfall???
Vanquish???
Little big planet 3????
Far cry 4????
Minecraft???

Why so many recent and sub par games????

Who ever made this list is just joking around or has no taste in games at all!!!!

I saw three or four good picks but most are just WTF.
