Forums - Gaming Discussion - Was the original Xbox the best Microsoft console?

Yes. It was WAY ahead of it's time and a fucking beast. Sure, the library was nothing compared to PS2 and PS2 owns that generation games wise but... that console? Hands down the best (relative to it's competition) hardware they've ever made.

Since it only had one Forza and zero JRPG's I have to say no.

Zero jrpgs?

What do you call phatansy star online, blackstone, shenmue 2 and metal dungeon?

Pffft, call yourself an xbox fan?

Shenmue 2 is definetly not a JRPG.  Phantasy Star Online is a ORPG don't care about those.  Blackstone never made it to the US.  Metal Dungen might be a JRPG but it looks worse then the worst JRPG on the 360 Enchanted Arms.  So yeah I stand but what I said earlier the original Xbox had zero JRPG's.

"Japanese role playing game"

Shenmue 2 is that.

Pso is that.

Blackstone is a jrpg, not counting it because it didnt release in the US makes zero sense "i wont count a jrpg because it only came to japan!"

Metal dungeon may not have looked great but quality has no bearing on a games genre.

But hey, nice try.

After the Gamecube disappointed me and since I was biased against the PS2 for fanboy reasons, the original Xbox was my favorite console of that gen after the Dreamcast croaked. I have many fond memories of it.

But....no, Xbox 360 was better. If you want to argue in terms of purely the hardware, the Xbox was definitely more technically impressive for its generation than 360 was. It had the best graphics, hard drive, built in broadband and a DVD player all in the same box, something Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube couldn't say. They all had some of these elements, but the Xbox was the only one with all of them. And when the games USED all of these different functions together? No games on any other system came close.

But the Xbox's library was small compared to PS2. It was lacking in many genres, most infamously the JRPG. In the end it really was just a Halo playing machine that just so happened to have some awesome SEGA titles (like Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future) and quality PC ports PS2 could only dream of pulling off.

Xbox 360 took everything its predecessor did and made it better. Universal custom soundtracks, a fully fleshed out digital store, drastically improved online infrastructure and stuff like cross-gaming chat, wireless controllers, and a MUCH bigger, MUCH more diverse library with far more quality titles and exclusives that also includes most of the games that made the original Xbox awesome thanks to backwards compatibility. In the end the 360 benefits from much better technology and a lifespan that lasted twice as long. The original Xbox is cool, but to say it's better is to look at it through nostalgia goggles, I think.

Yes, Xbox 360 can also be associated with early DRM, pay to play models, and DLC (hell, the horse armor DLC for Oblivion...) but I don't think that can negate all of the great things it did.

I recently un-earthed my original Xbox. Gave it a clean up and hooked it up to my HDTV via component cables. Played the first Halo(of course) and was surprised by how nice it looked even to this day.

What a coincidence, I also played through Halo 1 yesterday... but the much prettier anniversary version on my XBO.

The original Xbox was my favorite 6th gen console, but when I moved on, I sold most Xbox-games and replaced them with prettier versions (or sometimes handheld versions I can play on the go). There aren't many titles left which I can't play in better quality on another system which draw me to my old "crystal" Xbox.

Nevertheless it is still connected to my CRT in the retro corner of our guest room:

Orange light gives away the softmod/hardmod on your xbox :P

It had a fantastic launch. Those Sega games.... I have a fondness for my Xbox, but it's more of a swan song for Sega nostalgia. The Xbox 360 was better in every other way except build quality.

I loved my X360, even tho it is the shittiest console hardware quality wise that ive ever seen.

The consoles that we buy in my country are imported from the US, so there is no warranty over here.

I bought the X360 at launch, it RROD on my less than a year after.

I bought a second one, which lasted more...like 3 years before it also RROD on me.

I said, no more.

The original Xbox had so many good games but I believe the 360 is the best so far (design, controllers, games, etc...).

No, it's fat and ugly.

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

Wow that controller.

Idk. Even with the hardware failure during the first couple years I'd say the 360 is a better console. That thing was amazing.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

The Original Xbox was by far the most powerful console back in its days. MS went nuts with it's specs.
Unfortunately the price tag was ... Ambitious. Still a great console that pushed online gaming on a console to a new level

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
