Forums - Sales Discussion - Why hasn't Nintendo revealed Super Mario Maker's worldwide sale numbers??

Super Mario Maker was released two weeks ago and we have Japan's retail sale and its sales performance in UK sales list. But what about the other regions? I haven't heard or found anything about the North Americans sales but I have a feeling the game should have at least reach 1 million worldwide sales by now.

Nintendo revealed Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U sales in their first week. So what gives? Is it because Mario Maker is a new spin off IP?

It has certainly reached 1m in sales by now, so I'm a bit confused as well. Is there any other big game for the Wii U that they haven't done this for?

It may very well be because the game wasn't an instantaneous runaway hit like Nintendo expected to be after all the time they spent hyping it these past few months. Companies only brag when something has been a ridiculous success. They tend to stay quiet if performance is more average.

I was wondering this myself. There should be no reason the number hasn't been announced yet. Unless *record scratch* Mario Maker didn't do as well as we all think it did WW. But that's not true, so idk.

bet: lost

It's strange to see as well, but hopefully this silence is something good :/

I think the opposite... it probably still needs to hit 1m. Let's take a look: it sold around 200k on its first 2 weeks in Japan. Now let's look at Europe: NSMBU, a Mario 2D Platformer, sold less in Europe than it did in Japan, even with bundles. So let's be positive and say Super Mario Maker did about the same as Japan, 200k. That gives us 400k, leaving another 550k for NA and 50k for RoW. I honestly don't believe it did 550k on its first 2 weeks in NA. I mean, Splatoon's first month in the US, according to NPD, was 290k (June) and 165 (launch week in May).

I'm sorry guys, but SMM is probably below 1m right now.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Yeah I wouldn't be suprised if that was the case. SMM is a really niche title and some people just have no interest for this game. I strongly belive it will surpass 1 million by the time the holidays come around but for now it's performing average.

Also as of Sep. 17th there was 1 million levels that were uploaded in the game. If a game sold 1 million copies then how come only 1 million levels were uploaded? Seems pretty low if you ask me, even if that was 10 days ago.

thats a very random assessment of a few weeks of sales that you have no idea about

If "some people have no interest for this game" is a qualifier of niche, then every game ever must be niche. There is not a singular game that appeals to everyone. We also don't know exactly how it's performing worldwide, so it's impossible to say it's performing average.

September 17th was less than a week after the game launched, so I'd say that's pretty good for over 1m levels created (they did note that it was over, so for all we know it could've been closer to 1.5m or something).

Because it hasn't reached 1 million yet?
