Forums - Gaming Discussion - So... Why everybody complains so much about Wii U's hard drive and not the PS4 one?

Those aren't actual installations, unless there's a patch involved. I forgot what the term for them is, but you can delete them when your done with the game, and if you ever pick it up again, your PS4 instantly reinstalls it. I think it's just for performance reasons, though I honestly don't know. Either way, I've had the same 500 GB PS4 hard drive since my purchase on Day 1, and I have had no space issues. I simply delete the games I'm done with.

Edit: Background Installation is the term.

Also, downloading and installing digital games on the wiiu takes for fucking ever.

Downloading and installing the optional data for xcx took pretty much the entire day.

Both of those are incorrect, or at least inherrently incorrect.

The Wii U DOES have a SSDHD.

The difference between what a game takes up on the drive in comparison is vastly different.

What is a SSDHD? A Solid State Drive Hard drive? There's no such thing.

"SSD HDD = SSHD and innovation"

So much ignorance in this thread, between people thinking Wii U uses DVD's and now a lack of knowledge of hybrid drives.

Since Wii U allows for usb HDD's/SSD's/Flash Drives I think the complaints with regards to the Wii U's storage capacity are moot.

For $50 you get this:

^ 1TB and small as hell.

I have 500gb and have something like 19 games installed and still have free space left. Its not an issue for me, its only an issue with PS+ users who get new games every month.

PS4 installs the games while you can play them at the same time if you put in the disc. You will get better performance while getting the same expierance like on the wiiu. Thats all what matters

Just read some of the pervious entries and found others have jump on it. Nothing much to add.

I got both my Wii U and the PS4 I bought brand new last night for below MSRP, so I could just use the extra $150 I saved between the two on one external for each of them if I wanted to. So I personally don't care.

Just upgrade the internal PS4 HDD. After that, use the replaced 500GB HDD as external drive on the Wii U. No need to buy two HDDs.

That's actually a pretty good idea, should I ever care to upgrade my HDD on either. With how cluttered my gaming space already is, I'll leave it be for now. I have my Dreamcast sitting literally on top of my Wii U lol. Sort of poetic considering how both ended up in history. (I use my Wii U much more hut the Dreamcast isn't exactly flat on top, and the latter is the only console that I could place on top of another without crushing one, given my limited shelf space.)

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I only buy physical unless it's an indie so i don't care.

However... i will never understand people who need more than 500gb.... have you guys tried... i don't know.... maybe.... uhh... DELETE THE GAMES YOU ALREADY FINISHED?

Seriously what's the point in having that 45gb single player game forever and ever installed? You are never going to play it again stop lying to yourself.

People really have the problems to install that Bloodsoul game on 500Gb PS4? Because there is no other worthy games on the console.

32 GB << 500 GB

what's your question exactly?

WiiU doesn't force full game installs. So 32GB is solely for digital purposes and saves. While it would be nice to have offered larger, that would only have been to be equal to others. Its not really necessary as the system design does not force the consumption of that HDD unless you decide to go digital.

PS4 forces it regardless of your purchase habits, meaning at some point 500GB is consumed no matter what and you are then required to buy external or process time consuming delete/installs.

Its a valid point. Why did everyone complain about the raw numbers but not about the system design.

With WiiU I have a large number of games, digital and disc, yet I only have my original 32GB and have never considered buying an external drive as I would just buy disc. With PS4, I'd also be forced to buy an external drive as I would not want to deal with delete/install process once I had "too" many games.

i have the PS4 since release date and have no idea how much storage I have left, do you know why? Because I have never ran out of storage. Having said that, I download basically every PS+ game + have quite a lot of digital games (nba 2k15, MGS GZ, FIFA 15, Destiny, UFC, Until Dawn, GTA 5, Bloodborne, Driveclub) plus a couple physical games in Killzone and MGS5 TPP.

Is it possible I'll run out of space at some point? Of course, but will I really need to have all these games installed at the same time + all the demos and ps+ games? Probably not.

So the short answer to the OP is, with 500 GB you can do a hell of a lot more than 32GB. Would 1TB be better? yeah, but eventually would also run out of space, no storage space is unlimited. Also costs are a factor for most people, even though I wouldn't mind paying 1000€ for a beast console as long as the quality would be there, the masses freak out when an entertainment system approaches or dares pass the 500€ barrier (as long as it's not a phone), so limits have to be set, including storage ones.
