Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does Xenoblade X have the biggest hand-made world in an offline videogame yet?

TL;DR, no, it isn't the biggest world in an offline videogame.

Not going to get in this argument of map comparisons but don't assume the characters sprint at anything remotely resembling human speed.  They don't.  In fact, in most games the speeds are unrealistic in one direction or another.  Often very unrealistic.

However, your 3 to 5 square miles assertion is hilariously off.  I can tell you that right now by looking at character to creature to land form scale.  Skyrim is bigger than that and having played Skyrim for hundreds of hours and worked extensively with the Creation Kit with maps of various sizes including an enormous one, I can tell you with 100% certainty that XCX is far, far larger than Skyrim.   By a very significant margin.

Beat me to it. There was a really good article back when Oculus started being really publicized that noted that Skyrim characters run at somewhere around 35-50mph, because the camera angle is lined up a certain way outside of VR and to make the character seem like he's running at a normal speed it has to be sped up quite a bit.

Again, I'll reiterate that the game isn't the largest no matter what we think about its size, because I feel like people missed that in my comment. But I'll also reiterate that we're still pulling numbers out of our asses without any sources. Of course, I'm guilty given the comment I just made now, but if any of us want to be taken seriously here we're gonna need more than made up numbers. I personally don't care if I'm taken seriously right now because I'm not trying to prove a point one way or another; only reason I even popped in was to point out the lack of sources lol

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Well, according to Takehashi, the playable field is 400 square km or 154 square miles.  Which I find believable.  That's 12.5x12.5 miles roughly.  I've worked with a map that large before on a project called Middle Earth Roleplaying Project, which had a map of almost that size.  However, we don't know how much water is counted in this.

As a lot of people pointed out, no, its not. However, I feel that what space it has looks very creative and interesting, and each part looks to have been crafted very well.

I have XCX on my desk right now, I have played it quite a bit, and I can say with 100% actual certainty, that it is not bigger, not at all.

Isn't Skyrim like 40 square km and xcx is 400 square km, so xcx is bigger than skyrim.

Both Skyrim and XCX take under 30 minutes to run from one end of the map to the other, skyrim is mostly land, xcx is mostly water.

thus, usable map size of skyrim is bigger, and the "400 square km" "and 10x the size of skyrim" stuff is clearly bullshit.

Isn't running waaaaay faster in X? Not to mention that the map isn't a square or even close, so measuring the run from one end to the other is certainly not enough to get a good idea of the actual size.

Not a great deal faster, no, and the map not being square means that you have to run around the curve of the island, which increases how long it takes to run it, it doesnt make the map any bigger, because the reason for that curve is a vast area that is water only, and 99% of water areas have no interactable elements, enemies or anything like that, too.

As i mentioned in an earlier post, the map is inflated on XCX, the actual detailing, structure and so on is pretty poor, and as you play it, areas just feel small, and when you finally get a doll so you arent forced to endure the enflated environment, it becomes even clearer that the map isnt that complex or large at all.
