Fun Fact!

If OP named the first diagram "hardware" instead of "consoles", this thread would have less than half replies.

OP sure knows how to draw a crowd.

That only becourse some would like to make it a case.. rather than talk about Nintendo VS Sony Last 5 month of 2015.. (everyone know what i mean.. and can see it in the OP.. and I belive "consoles" is a fine and correct name when we talk about em both)

To your other post.. no.. This is only about the 5 last month of 2015.. :)

Though I do hope you realize where all the criticism comes from.Last 5 months seem pretty arbitrary. Why not the last 4 months starting September or the last 6 months? Both of which would be a lot more logical than the current setup.

The next thing is that you also restrict this comparison to 1st party products, which is not only the strong suit of Nintendo but also Nintendo having a lot more of those still coming this year than Sony. However that's not because Nintendo is better in that regard but because Sony already released their biggest blockbusters earlier this year.

There is no way around it, this comparison is made to make Nintendo look better in comparison by restricting the time frame and content in a very specific, yet arbitrary way.

It's no less ridiculous than to compare software sales in a specific launch week for a certain game. Hence the criticism is pretty much valid and I guess the only defense for it is really that it's just an arbitrary comparison with no meaning or logic behind it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Handhelds are consoles

Looks like the 3DS is carrying all the weight for Nintendo :p

I will not drag this out to be a discusion about this topic being "arbitrary" or not.. but I will still answer your qustion/complanes this time.. And then you may understand me or not.. :)

To why I use 5 month instead of other..

Its where VGC is in worldwide software now.. and 5 month.. rest of 2015.. starting with newest data.. makes sense in my head.

Regardin tracking first/second party..

Yes Nintendo is strong.. yes nintendo get some big games.. and yes Sony not so many.. BUT that dosent make it ontrue.. Its still ok to see how many "top 20" games they each have in a given period.. and in this case.. from now to end of year.. almost half a year.. (and the far biggest in videogaming) and this is only first/second-party.. all the games sony sell will still count in total gaming

Comparison made to make Nintendo look better..

This comparison is meant to follow Nintendo VS Sony current gen.. from now and rest of year.. and use VG worldwide numbers.. If thats makes Nintendo look better.. its not me.. :)

And last to the "just an arbitrary comparison with no meaning or logic behind it"

This is what it is.. Nintendo VS Sony current gen last 5 month of 2015 total sales "comperision"

If any errors are found.. please repport.. :)

The errors are:

The Wii U had a one year headstart. A significant time to build up. 2016 is for the PS4 what this year is for Wii U.

Why this relative short timeframe?

Handheld consoles ain't stationary consoles. To make the flaw not to obvious, this thread is about...

Nintendo VS Sony

..only. MS doesn't have a handheld plattform.

Wow this thread went downhill fast.

OT:

I will give Hardware to Sony and Software to NIN for the last 5 months of the year......even though that in itself is weird....to pick just the last 5months of the year.

You think last 5 months is weird? What's really weird is that this thread somehow believes 3rd parties are irrelevant. Add in sales from 3rd parties to those charts and it wouldn't even be a debate anymore. Even if only using the last 5 months.

Ah well, I guess for those that derive joy from what this thread is supposed to represent this thread checks all the right boxes and conveniently leaves out everything else.

What do you mean.. I do count all 3-party games in total games..

Only place I dont count 3-party is in the "top 20 first/second party".. And there the name should say it all.

Nintendo's 8th gen console has not been released yet.

It already has a name and games in development. It will be called Nintendo NX and lets hope its on pair with the PS4.

With that being said. This is not a fair comparison, the PS4 will receive around 10 times more games than the WiiU in the coming months.

I don't think you actually understand the term console generation.

you can't use this as a measure of each gaming divisions success
there's the massive factor of ps+
expectations each company have

There isn't really any good reason to isolate it to current generation only. If you do that, you're going to be missing significant parts of the picture.

Total hardware is the most interesting metric, as it's the only metric that's very clearly defined. Software could be measured in very many ways. Retail games sold, total amount of games sold, total amount of non-indie games sold, total revenue from games sold, etc.

By hardware, Sony is going to sell the most, for the second year in a row. It's worth noting that that isn't actually because Sony is selling a lot of hardware at the moment, but rather because Nintendo is selling quite little.

If you look at the numbers from the start of the year until the start of August (which is the most recent weekly chart), the numbers are as follows.

2015:

Ps4: 6462k
PsV: 2629k
Ps3: 1019k
Total: 10110k (10.11 millions)

In the same period of 2014, it was

Ps4: 5492
PsV: 1457
Ps3: 2159
PsP: 457k
Total: 9565k

In other words, total Sony hardware is up roughly 5.5% over last year. If we then compare last year to the previous years;

2014: 21044

2013: 18859

2012: 20044

2011: 22646

2010: 23139

2009: 22852

2008: 24252

2007: 20706

We can see that if the 5% increase sticks, then 2015 will in fact be roughly as high as all the years of the seventh generation. Keep in mind that 2007 and 2008 lacks the Ps2 sales of the period, which were significant.
