Handhelds are not consoles..

Aaah, the eternal debate. Isn't the definition of a Videogame console just any device whose main purpose is playing videogames? If it is, then they count.

Na, they're not consoles plain and simple. Bending the definition because it would suit you is pretty ridiculous.

Which definition? Wikipedia doesn't define consoles as stationary and includes handhelds as handheld consoles. As do pretty much everyone else. Bending the definition of video game consoles just to suit you is pretty ridiculous.

Well, honestly there is little to debate. We just need to check any dictionary. let's see the Merriam Webster:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/console

5: an electronic system that connects to a display (as a television set) and is used primarily to play video games

Counter with Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console

"A video game console is a device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game. The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a console machine primarily designed for consumers to use for playing video games in contrast to arcade machines or home computers. It includes home video game consoles, handheld game consoles, microconsoles and dedicated consoles."

Wikipedia is usually good (I use it a lot) but it isn't a recognized dictionary. And really, since it is pretty clear that the term "console" for "handhelds" is rejected by many I don't even know how it could end up in there. Maybe they tried to make a neologism but it isn't working. To me a console must connect to a separate screen. So a PS VIta isn't a console, while a PlayStation TV (and the Wii U) are.

Oh, and the iPod is closer to an handheld than a 3DS is close to a console. :p

The term console for handhelds is also accepted by many, and makes sense when you think of the prime objective of a console device is as a dedicated games machine

It is accepted by some but that's why I said others reject it. We do not just disagree, we say it is plain wrong. And the dictionaries are on this side. Everytime it's used we get this kind of discussion. The problem here is the lack of a proper term that includes both consoles and handhelds.

In any case the one above is just a linguistic debate. What I find wrong is to join the two markets. They are separated and even complementary. The way people use them is totally different anyway. Indeed, HW apart, handheld gaming is more in competition with mobile gaming than with console gaming.

Sure. Next time you're in a English class try to object that a term defined by the Merrian Webester isn't correct "because Wikipedia said so". Apart from all the class laughing I would love to see the professor reaction.

When we play a video game, the psychology is to beat it or to "win". That generally means that we complete a task, vanquish an enemy or reach some kind of score. After that, the game is essentially over lest we play it again or have some kind of multiplayer arena to demonstrate our talents.

Does this mentality of having to win need to spill over into our civil conversations with others to the point where we can't communicate a simple idea or two?

English class would be foreign language. But I'm out of school for a long time and have learned to think for myself. Also, a dictionary is not for defining things, but explaining shortly a meaning.

For that you have encyclopedias. But looking around, you find the following

But in this case, you just need to read your definition:

"an electronic system that connects to a display (as a television set) and is used primarily to play video games"

Connects to a display, the TV-set is given as an example. Wikipedia has exactly the same definition: "A video game console is a device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game."

So Webster also includes handhelds, although they don't elaborate much on the basic definition.

Not counting PS3 is quite a big handicap for Sony, especially in the software department(PS3 sold allmost as much software as PS4 in that week). Why not just count all platforms VGC tracks? With PS3 and Wii it would look like this:

Hardware:
Sony: 216,398
Nintendo: 171,121

Software:
Sony: 1.895,706
Nintendo: 1.709,535

Also Sony is likely to have far higher digital software sales, wich VGC doesn't track.
